Some of my best friends and my current partner I met at some of the bars in Newport.

Newport bars are small and aren’t really made for partying and dancing so I feel like it’s way easier to actually talk to people. Not to mention there’s a crap ton of college students so it’s very easy to meet people your age. People in Newport are very sociable.

Like dogs? Meet people at the dog park, like photography? Look for a group who also likes photography. Like sports? Join SFAC! Drinking is the easiest go to any bar.

Volunteer for some organization - based around an activity you like or a place you admire (homeless shelter, etc)

Nothing binds people together faster than working together for a common goal.

Online and phone obsession has made in-person venues way less worthwhile also

But don't give up - -

When I see someone focused on their phone I ask them:

"You tryng to call me?"

OK this one is going to seem crazy. Take an EMT class. They're pretty short, typically 2 nights per week for 3+ hours plus a few hours on saturdays for practicing skills. Programs vary and many are shorter than 3 months. The cost is probably still around $1,200 but many towns offer local scholarships (we do). EMTs are in incredible demand, you can work literally anywhere, usually on your own schedule, part time, weekends, nights. I work one shift per week. Yes it's SHITTY pay but that's not why you are there.

You will meet lots of people your age. You will meet other EMTs and medics. You will meet firefighters. You will regularly see nurses.

It's honestly fun, for me it was life changing. Guarantee that you will meet new people in ways you cannot imagine!

Join SFAC or another adult sports league - they're great to try a sport you don't know, play something you do, and you can pick your level of competitiveness.

Meetup.com there's tons of social groups. Join ones that interest you and you'll meet people for sure. Smaller bars might be good too. I've had great conversations with random people at Riff Raff and Foolproof Brewery

Don’t know anywhere rhode island specific but the gym is a great place to start. Build up your confidence and physique while also surrounding yourself with other confident gym girls, thus leading to potential partners who are healthy and confident.

You can go out to bars and clubs but honestly don’t recommend that personally unless you want something less serious.

If you’re an active type person, look into hashing and see if there’s any hashing groups in your area! It’s basically a jogging group but with alcohol and a scavenger hunt mixed in. If you don’t make girlfriends you’ll probably at least make good friends.

Go to local little concerts at restaurants and bars and see if there’s anyone that captures your interest

I don’t know why this is getting downvoted. If the gym is a hobby, like minded people will be there. Like I met a great guy at CrossFit. I would not suggest joining just for dating. Any place one has to use good judgement and discretion when approaching another person for the purpose of communicating and maybe dating….. MeetUp is an option. There are groups for all kinds of different interests and hobbies. Maybe even a cooking class or art class….. Host a party and have friends bring food/drinks and a single friend or two.

I’m just gonna assume people have had BAD experiences with dating gym people, and I will keep that in mind for myself lol

I didn't think about it like this before, but now that you mention it, you could def run into some really narcissistic people in the gym. They're a minority of the overall members in my experience, but they are there.

Because this is Reddit. The general opinion would be that fitness is "fat phobic" and all gym goers are "far right nutjobs". It's ridiculous.
