Do you have any previous blacksmithing or blade smithing skills? Wanting to make a sword without having any previous experience is equivalent to registering for a marathon without having run 1 mile previously. There are a lot of foundational skills to learn before starting a big project like making a blade.

The Steel Yard has a number of classes that could help familiarize you with those skills, but they do have a pretty no weapons’ policy, and when they do offer a knife making class it is an intermediate level class. My suggestion is to take some beginner, skills classes, and then go to a more specialized facility like the New England school of blacksmithing. Good luck, and have fun!

Check out Iron Mountain Forge and Furniture.

They have knife making classes, and the blacksmith loves to make swords.

Contact Iron Mountain Forge. It was a one night experience workshop last year and I made a stamped metal bowl and a bottle opener. got to play with fire and some cool pieces of machinery. Like other poster said, a first time creation can't be too complicated. It was a lot of fun and I did learn a few fundamental metal working concepts. And my bottle opener does work! I think they were on a reality TV show about metalworking but I had never heard of that before. Pretty cool though. http://ironmtnforge.com/

I second this. I took my son here for his 10th birthday. He started watching Forged in Fire. They wouldn’t make a weapon for liability reasons, but it was really cool he made a ring toss set for the back yard.

They were absolutely fantastic I can’t say enough good things about this place. It’s female owned and these women are such bad asses!!!!
