happy Friday all! I know there are mixed feelings about the professional soccer team coming to Rhode island in 2024, playing in a new stadium to be built on the seekonk river in Pawtucket. That is to be expected.

For those of you that are curious or interested there is an official supporter group for the team that has started on branding and idea creation. If you want to be heard or just follow along I encourage you to join the discord and contribute or just be a fly on the wall. Either way we would be happy to have you.

Beyond excited! Already planning events and meet ups. The plan is to march to the games from the local pub and supporter groups official HQ.

I don't like the fact that they put taxpayers on the hook for a stadium, but my taxes have certainly gone to worse things over the years.

Cool man, you stay home. I'm gonna go and enjoy it, and put some money into the economy. Why would you want the stadium to fail? There's nothing you can do about the taxes now, so just hope it's successful and helps Pawtucket/Rhode Island. What a self-loathing Rhode Islander thing to do...

I think it’s appropriate that the title says “Support Group” as you’ll need one to get through the “boondoggle, no one watches soccer, something something Kurt Schilling” gauntlet.

Well there is zero truth to this quoted statement It's cool that people obviously dislike soccer but. Rhode island is one of the hottest markets in the country for soccer viewership year over year. The stadium has already sold deposits for half the stadiums capacity and we are still a year out.

We respect the negative responses as we are aware that plenty of American folks don't like the sport. But we are certainly going to prove those folks wrong soon enough.

100% agree. A soccer stadium will do fine there. People are just bent because they were one the 12 people who still went to every Pawsox game.

And my attitude to those folks is, you had a chance to keep the Pawsox in RI but then something something Kurt Schilling’ed it to Worcester.

Anyone spending any time in Central Falls, Pawtucket, or Providence simply can not miss the large Hispanic, Spanish speaking population.

Their cultural attitude towards soccer is different.

I wouldn’t be surprised if their matches routinely outdrew P-Bruin games.

I agree. People are thinking of Irish and Italian boomers when they say crap like that. A modest capacity soccer stadium would sell out all the time. If and when I move back to PVD I would totally look into season tickets.

Irish and Italian 36 yr old here.... love me some footy

Not a boomer though. I still find it amazing that the people who coined the term “soccer mom” are the same ones who can’t fathom their kids might have grown up to like the sport.

There are hispanic communities that are bigger into baseball than soccer. Its a shame to lose the Pawsox just to turn around spend money on this. Then claim its in the name of affordable housing.

Rhode Island FC is such a lame name but I'm definitely going to hit some games.

The name is SO much better than it could have been. I mean, our state animal is the R.I. Red, so it coulda been the chickens or the cocks.🤷🏼‍♂️

But really, we could have been Rhode Island Reds FC!

They had a better name in their original renderings of Tidewater Stadium - the RI Riptides

RIFCSUPERFAN OP t1_jarvxyz wrote

I don't disagree with the name being a touch lame. But I think they didn't want to alienate any particular areas or groups.. it was the safe bet and it matched the branding "a team for all of rhode island"

Rhode Island FC? Wow what a missed opportunity. The little states, the clamcakes, the rhody reds, the shoreliners, the clamdiggers, the rhode ragers, buddy’s babies, the pothole dodgers, I could go on!
