Long story short, family was looking to move back east and a great company offered me a job…

We are moving from Minnesota but I’m originally a NJ guy. Can I get some local knowledge and advice? The job is near URI. Relocation is very good, while I can’t spend 1 million on a house, I can get in the 700 or 800k.

So please give some honest insight on western RI?

Edit: thanks guys I appreciate the comments except for the knuckle heads who told me to ‘go back to Newjersey’ but that’s the Internet.

Why does everyone shit on Coventry?

Near URI is not the sticks. I live 5 minutes away from URI and work in Providence with zero issues or stress about traffic at all. There isn’t much on the market in South County, but 700k should be plenty for a really nice house. Pretty much anywhere in South County is a great place to live, but feel free to DM me for details on questions…

URI area is upscale rural/suburbs. Anything north and west of URI is the sticks. East Greenwich is rich. Cranston/Johnston is NJ of RI

Hope Valley, Richmond, and Charlestown are great options. So is South Kingstown! All are 20 mins or less to URI. Hope valley and Richmond are more small town rural and Charlestown is small town coastal.

If I could choose to live anywhere I think I’d pick Charlestown. It has low taxes, excellent school district, near lots of great beaches, near westerly (where there’s lots of shopping/amenities). Downsides I’d say are: more touristy in the summer, homes are pricier, no legitimate city center/downtown area

One of the benefits to RI is that you can get a little bit of everything within a relatively short drive: city, beach, farmland, major box retailers, etc…. Welcome! You’ll love it here

I miss it. I'm from there and have family and friends out there. RI is nice enough though and has a lot to offer. I'm just ready for a change. Plus, I miss real winters ;)

I'm Providence born & raised, but western RI is nice. Traffic is busy over there in the tourist season, to go down to the beaches. Congratulations on the offer, and good luck homie

Chariho is an excellent school district, plenty of land, close to work, close to 95…

Richmond is really nice and rural but still close to highway, and to beaches!

Completely agree. If we were going to move somewhere else in the state, Richmond would be one of the first places we’d look.

Can’t help with housing because I’m on the other side of the bay, plus I’ve only lived here 2 1/2 years, but I just wanted to say welcome from this Jersey girl!

South County is the best. If you've got kids in school or going to have them, both North and South Kingstown have great schools.

Me and my wife have looked at houses in that range and they're honestly kinda shit or very far away. Renting for another year or so honestly is a pretty good decision at the moment

Richmond, Charlestown, and Exeter you can still find some great deals! North Kingstown, too, which is actually a very cool town- South County but almost central in the state. Great back roads to Kingston- did you say your working at/near URI? South Kingstown is where I am, it's awesome, and Narragansett too, but there's not a lot available. Welcome- Rhode Island is amazing. If you'd like the name of a great South County specialist realtor (Not me or family lol) dm me, or for any questions you might have about areas or schools etc!

I was in a similar situation moved from Northern Illinois. If you have kids consider schooling first. Southern RI is called south county even though that is not the name of the county. Schoold are generally better there. Roads from URI are generally are 50 mph or less and jam up around URI / commuters/ events. There are some new housing deeveloopments going up in Exeter on route 2, about 15 minutes north. Route 2 is a major highway amd taxes low. Charlestown on the south coast has great values but most housing is rebuilt former cottages, and a 30 miinute commute clow roads. South kingstown and North Kingstown are growing communities, good schools and higher taxes. Bonnet Shores is very desirable, again mostly older but updated and if you can snag something there its 30 minutes worst commute, and will growe in value

I’ve lived in Narragansett and know the area surrounding URI well. I currently live in Middletown and we also have a place in Newport. I’m originally from Bergen County area NJ.

We are near covid low inventory of single family homes in the state. The market is pretty competitive and there are lots of multi offer scenarios depending on the property. If you see something that you like it’s best to move quick!

I’m a realtor with HomeSmart Real Estate, and I’d be happy to chat if you want some insight on the area and local markets. Send me a DM and I’ll give you my contact info!

Congratulations! I’m not sure whose shitting on Coventry but like any town there’s good and bad. It used to be more rural and woodsy but over the last 2 decades, it’s been built up. Lots of new developments and chain retail stores making it feel more urban than country.

Near URI is a beautiful area, it’s referred to as South County although it’s not actually a county.

Richmond is more country living, south Kingston, Charlestown, Narragansett for beach vibes

Good luck!

Western RI is the sticks. You shouldn’t have any issue finding something in that price range.

TadpoleMajor t1_jbvh5xj wrote

Not ENTIRELY true. Southern RI is consistently very expensive. Northwestern RI is the real sticks.

Do you want a place that feels like Jersey with gold chains and crosses everywhere? Cranston my man!

Also if you can swing it, East Greenwich is probably a great landing spot

You could look in Hope Valley, or westerly, both are good choices to look.

Western RI like Greene/Burrillville/Foster/ Exeter?

kayakyakr t1_jbw6v8v wrote

Can't really go wrong with anything on the Southwest side of RI, or SECT near the border for that matter. Exeter and it's CT counterpart Voluntown get a little woodsy, but even they have their charms.

If I was moving to this area for any reason other than the reason I moved here, I would probably buy something Central Westerly/Pawcatuck. Ideally walking or at least short biking distance from downtown.

Yet, that’s their problem. I’m not going to apologize for moving into the space that needed it.
