Away from home for work in NYC and had a real bad day where nothing went right. Went to a local pub to drown my sorrow in beer chicken wings and a cheeseburger. Turns out they had Gansett on tap. Got to my hotel and saw they also had cans in the hotel lobby too. Nothing beats a small taste of home after a rough day on the road!

Gansett (that being their standard old-school brew) is actually brewed in Rochester NY, so it's pretty popular in the Empire state. In recent years they have been brewing specialty beers at their brewery location in Providence as well as the Guild co-op in Pawtucket, such as their Fresh Catch and Dels shanty.

I have been to the Brewery at India point but don't think i'll be going back. don't get me wrong the beer they had was good. I was just shocked they didn't have just regular Gansett

IIRC it’s something about the agreement with the 2 breweries they use (Genesee in New York and a brewery in Wisconsin) that they can’t brew and sell it at the Providence brewery

More to do with RI laws that limit what breweries can sell to product produced on site. Even that is pretty recent - before 2016 only wineries could sell on site.

Yep that's the reason. Taproom permits only let you sell what you actually produce. Otherwise if you're selling stuff you just truck in, you need a liquor license like a full bar.

I was also surprised, but Gansett is actually pretty popular in NYC. You’ll find it in many pubs.
