My husband and I (mid-30s) are visiting Newport/Middletown for vacation Oct 17-20. We originally planned to visit last month but needed to reschedule. I had a bunch of beachy/low-key outdoor things planned but now since it's fall, I'm re-working our itinerary. What are some fun fall weekday things to do in Newport? Is there anywhere to enjoy a drink on the beach? I was looking forward to the Lawn at Castle Hill only to see they close on Monday :( A friend suggested the Jack-O-Lantern fest at the RWP Zoo. Is that worth the drive? Appreciate any suggestions!

Walk Thames St’s cobblestones and get some seafood and a drink on one of the wharfs along the harbor. Find some live music. I don’t know of any beach bars but Flo’s clam shack is next-best thing.

Most people go to Breakers but I think Rose Cliff is equally special. (Watch Arnold’s True Lies movie before you go.)

Cliff Walk and Brenton Point (kite flying)

Glen Farm in Portsmouth for a walk and photography.

Lunch in Wickford with a stop at the Beavertail lighthouse.

Zoo sounds fun too.

Edit: zoo praise

Edit: downvotes? I’m trying to be helpful here. What’s the problem? Did you only want pool halls and arcades or something? Geez

Maybe a drink at Chelo’s on the way to the zoo?

Maybe a ride to Tiverton Four Corners, Sakonnet Vineyard, with a stop at the Boathouse Restaurant on the water.

  1. The jack-o-antern fest is cute! They choose new themes each year & have a bunch of artists decorate/carve thousands of pumpkins. I’d say it usually takes about 20-30 minutes to walk through. If you do go, make sure you go after the sun sets and try your best to go on a weekday, as it will be WAY less crowded.

  2. For Newport, you could visit some of the mansions if that’s your thing. They are almost always a self-guided tour with the option of using headphones as a tour guide. The mansions are extremely beautiful.
