Insurance company is making me do it within a month or I won’t be covered. Oh well.
Are u kiddinggggg me I have no idea where that is 😂
You will need to go to the DMV and get a new one. Some advice if you decide to go to Cranston:
Get there as much time before they open (8:30 am) as you can and wait in line outside. Bring food, a coffee, and a podcast while you wait. It’s worth it. Once the doors open it’s like Best Buy on Black Friday. Waiting for an hour outside > waiting for six hours inside. RI DMVs are reservation/appointment now.
Have the paperwork printed and filled out before you arrive so when you get inside you can get right in line and are ready to go. As a bonus you’re catching the staff before they’ve had a chance to deal with anyone else’s bullshit and are typically in a better mood, even more so if you’re prepared.
Cash or check but no temporary checks (like when you open a new bank account. I learned this the hard way). Unless it’s changed I don’t believe they take cards.. They take cards with a 3% processing fee.
Bring two forms of proof of residency and like every proof of identify you have to be safe.
There are some other DMVs in the state that are a little less crowded and somewhat faster. YMMV. I tried Middletown once and it wasn’t all that much quicker. Some other folks should be able to chime in with their experiences.
Not sure if it’s changed but when I moved to RI twelve years ago, my first license was good for two years and had to be renewed again in-person. After that it is every five years. Now they allow you to renew online and they’ll mail you a new ID card with your old picture.
No offense but it’s not the state of Rhode Island or your insurance carrier’s fault that the timing for your CT license renewal didn’t work out with your move. 🤷🏼♀️ It’s annoying but that’s the way it goes.
I don’t blame my insurance or care about paying or anything I just thought there would be some way to transfer the info since I just did it. I didn’t know the state DMVs have no way to get info from each other.
Lol I have had to go to the social security office more than once for this. It’s pretty painless, if that’s anything!
RI DMV’s are all reservation/appointment now, and do take credit cards (though tack on a 3% processing fee). I recently had to switch over my license and registration from out of state and it was quite painless, and not too horribly expensive.
Point #2 about having all your paperwork done in advance will make your life so much easier and the process much faster, and make sure you read the requirements for what you need to prove identity (my old state’s license and my passport was enough for me) and residence (2 pieces of official mail/eligible bills or accounts). The RI DMV website is kind of a pain but all the info and forms you need are there - do as much as you can in advance!
I transferred my license from NJ 2 years ago and havent seen my paper social card in 10. I dont think this is completely accurate.
Thank you for the corrections, will edit my post!
There is a SS office very close to the DMV office in Cranston. You can get a new one there.
It is 100%. I have transferred my license to RI twice in 7 years and they required the SS card both times. Wouldn't even take my passport, which if I remember correctly, also includes my SS number. Wish I could down vote you more than once because your terrible advice would put OP back at the DMV multiple times.
I physically dont have my SS card and I have a RI license, so either I'm magic or they screwed up.

"PROOF OF SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER: PROVIDE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER ON THE LI-1 OR CDL-1 FORM OR A LETTER ISSUED BY THE SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION STATING THAT THE APPLICANT IS NOT ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER"
Show me where it says paper card on the official list of stuff on the website or on the form itself? Your link doesnt even say paper card, it says proof of, which is the same language used in what I linked with less context.
The states don’t communicate as it is! Why would their DMV’s or RMV’s be different?
ETA just go to the smaller DMV branches and save yourself some grief.
Idk lol! the worst part is I finally got a good ID pic and now I have to try to get another one🤧
That’s good to know
If AAA does that kind of renewal go there. Way easier. They might only do in state stuff but it’s way better than the dmv. Also agreed why should another state care about what you did before? That’s standard operation procedure
I don’t think you can do a new license from out of state at AAA. It’s mostly renewal type of stuff. Regardless, the DMV is by appt now, not a line.
Ok ya I get its not their fault. I thought maybe they could at least use my same license picture or something, that’s all. Trust me it’s very stressful paying that much money to get new insurance that’s way more expensive, plus new license and registration when I just did it.
Also for some reason when I was on the phone with AAA (my insurance) they didn’t mention that I could go there instead of the DMV. I’ll have to ask them about that
Likely but once you have the RI license it’s way easier to go to AAA.
When I moved here from the Midwest I kept my old insurance and drivers license for about 6 months. I am sure questions would have been asked if I had needed to actually file a claim.
I’d check the DMV website before heading to AAA. There are some things than can only be done in Craaaaanston. Also, if you are getting RI plates you will probably need a VIN check from your local police department. At least that was the rule years ago.
Yeah when it’s not something starting from scratch (ie new license, new car, etc) it’s usually possible. But again, since the DMV is by appointment going to AAA doesn’t really save time anymore. Unless it just happens to be the closest location for you.
Yup I made the mistake of calling my insurance to change which card I was paying with and they asked my address. And then they were like uhhh if u don’t live in CT anymore, you can’t have CT insurance. I wish I didn’t say anything.
Same here I kept my NY license for a while but finally converted to RI so I could register the homestead credit for property taxes. Luckily that was like a week or two before the pandemic shut everything down. Also I think the license is only good for like 1 year then you have to renew it. Luckily that is just sending them money in the mail.

You need a whole new license, and be certain to read the document requirements, as they are very picky. For some of reason they also want your fucking paper social security card!
