We have been narrowing down the place we are relocating too. It’s between RI,MA, and MD. Looks like Newport is looking more likely. We are looking for a charming town with all the basic amenities within 1hr of Newport. We have horses so an affordable area where we can have a few acres. Quirky would be great with an art scene! Any recommendations?

Tiverton! There’s horses a few houses down from my house, lots of land, very quiet and quaint. It’s 30 mins from Newport and about 45 mins from Providence. And there’s crafts groups around with a souvenir/artsy spot at Four Corners. I have only been here a few months and I really love it! (I’m originally from the providence area.)

I agree with South Kingstown and Tiverton (opposite directions from Newport) but both offer the opportunity for a lot of space. I live in Newport and South County is the only area in RI that tempts me to move. Wakefield is super cute, with all the shopping you need, there are a lot of good restaurants in the area, galleries in Narragansett, awesome beaches, and 30 minutes to Newport. Good luck!!

Newport resident here. If I didn’t buy my place in 2007 there’s a zero percent chance I’d be looking for a home here as much as I love it. Middletown & Portsmouth have all the equestrian amenities on the island. I have a few friends into that scene but I have no idea of the costs. Tiverton is great though. My sister and her husband found a great little farm out there not to long ago. 2+ acres. They have livestock, are comfortable, and love there little plot. Most of our friends that have bought in the last few years did in either Tiverton or Bristol. Hope you find what you’re looking for!

$500k for a few acres? That won’t get you a place in RI, especially close to Newport. Realistically you’d need to up that budget significantly. RI doesn’t have large lots of land with small farm houses with lots of space for horses to roam. Maybe you can find that one place and get lucky, but your best bet is to contact a reputable agent… reputable. This sold 2yrs ago for $580k and it would’ve been exactly what you were looking for. So take this listing as a good point of reference.

I just came here to say Coventry (I grew up there) or Exeter area. Your not far from providence or Newport (20/30min), little over an hr from Boston, 3hrs from nyc. RI is beautiful in the fall and has lots of apple orchards to visit. As for art I’m pretty sure providence is an art capital in the US with RISD and Brown university being right there.

Maryland is too hot and is too expensive. RI more affordable housing than MA and a great quirky little state. Best beaches in northeast. A transplant's (from Los Angeles originally) take.

I’m from Tiverton and would definitely suggest looking there. It’s a small town maybe 30 minutes or less from Newport. I grew up with lots of friends who had horses too. South Tiverton is the part of town with plenty of acreage for horses! It’s a quiet town, nothing huge really happens there. I wouldn’t call it quirky or artsy though! Happy to answer any other questions you may have about the area too.

Good call! Hope you decide on RI; it is a special place. Be aware that the East bay has some flood zones (but I love the East bay) and is quite liberal. The Western part of the state is remarkably conservative politically.

Ok great! I’m looking for liberal and honestly the conservative bunch can’t be anywhere near crazy as we have here in Indiana. We are the home of Mike Pence after all!

It sucks! I hope you can find something good. Pre-covid what you wanted was possible, after the big surge of out of staters buying up 2nd homes etc I don't know that it is.
