We live in an era where republican politicians are running in Blue states when they’re not from there.

The ad isn’t to say transplants to the state can’t be in office. It’s pointing out she quite literally does not have residency in the state. How can she have the best interest of the inhabitants of Rhode Island when she herself isn’t one? She has close to no established history with this place. THAT is an outsider. Not someone who moved here 5+ years ago and really wants to help better their new home.

I agree with the sentiment, but don’t appreciate how the actors reflect RIers

I see your point, but she's definitely opened herself up to it with her flaky attitude. She's even admitted that she might leave if she loses. She doesn't seem to care about being perceived as an outsider, so it begs the question of why she should be given a courtesy she clearly isn't interested in asking for herself.

It's a valid criticism of her. There's lots of people that run for office that weren't born in a state. For her it seems a much more flagrant case of carpetbagging.

Agreed. She moved here and jumped in the race with no understanding of how Rhode Island government works. She's got a rich spouse and is looking for a hobby. No actual interest in understanding the state at all. Rhode Island is not interchangeable with Illinois, Florida, and the other states she's looking at for inspiration, namely Georgia and Tennessee.

With all due respect, I'm not a fan of her bringing her kid into the mudslinging.

I seriously doubt he fully understands the political situation

yeah, that made me feel something. other candidates (matt brown, Cynthia Mendes) had their kids in their ads... but they are much older and it was much more playful.

This there’s a huge difference between putting your kid on the TV saying oh my mom is great my dad‘s great they’re going to help make things better and another to have the kid talk shit about the opponent.
It tells me that Ashley has no respect for anyone not even her own kid.

samskeyti_ t1_ism5vty wrote

for me it's not that she's. not from here, it's that she hasn't made any attempt to actually be a part of her community in Rhode Island. hard to do that when you move here in January and immediately start running for office.

Because she’s being funded by the saudis who have pumped roughly 90,000,000 into our elections this year. 🤷🏻‍♀️

When it comes to just moving here and entering into a political race just because the opportunity presented itself, it’s fair game.

It’s ok to welcome anyone to the state to live here, and it’s also ok to criticize a politician for not living here long enough. One does not equal the other.

Do we really act that unwelcoming to someone who wants to run for Governor who hasn't lived here? Sure. I think most other states would feel the same way.
Do we act that unwelcoming to someone who wants to move to RI and live here? No.

Carpetbaggers are never welcome. McKee is using it to attack her because he doesn’t have much going for him besides attacking her, and it’s a very big point of criticism for Kalus, among a host of others.

So true. We've got a turd sandwich vs giant douche situation.

No. It would be bad if she just moved here a few years ago. The fact that she didn’t live here at this time makes it more than fair game.

Pretty sure a majority of states would have the same kind of ads.

She’s the definition of carpetbagger.

I also have a moral issue with political advertisements in general. Why spend money on political adverts who does that really help.

Yes. Have you not noticed that yet? Are you even a real rhode islander?

Loveroffinerthings t1_isoge4n wrote

She is an outsider. She literally just registered to vote here this year. After living in many areas of the country, RI is much more welcoming than other states. Go to Colorado and see ppl with native stickers, or in the South hearing ppl say “we’re full”.

Yes. F*** her and the horse from Illinois that she rode in on via Florida. .

Its one thing to be welcoming to someone who just moved. That doesnt mean you let them run the state

No, but I do think it's a bad ad. I don't like Kalus's recent ad with her kid either.

Agreed an Rhode Island needs new ideas.

She is 100 percent educating us...letting us know McKee has emerge3 Gov powers to stop Electric heights for ALL Rhode Islanders and not just poor ones.

Yes he has helped the poor i got 600 for my Electric bill.

But if he has the power to stop the hikes and taxes for all...why doesn't he?!
