I’m not a native Rhode Islander but I’ve heard plenty the years I’ve been here about how awful West Warwick is. I am going to need new housing in the next few months and some of the only studio/1bd rentals I’m finding in my budget are in West Warwick. I haven’t really been to the area - is it as bad as people say?

Any other areas to look in for affordable housing? I’ve seen a few options in Cranston, Pawtucket, too. I don’t mind being like 30 min out of the city or so. Also, I don’t want roommates, so please don’t suggest it!

Honestly, it’s affordable and not dangerous. It’s just a little trashy.

For example: I used to work at Joyal’s Liquors. We often had people standing outside on the corner asking for change. As soon as they made enough, they’d come in, fuel up on some cheap booze, and get back at it.

Once I had a guy come in and ask me how much a half pint of blackberry brandy was. I told him $6.99. He put a bunch of sweaty crumpled ones and change on the counter and goes “I got ten bucks. Do I got enough for two of ‘em?”

That is one of my many exemplary West Warwick stories.

Oh, and stay away from LA Cafe.

I've lived pretty close for the past eight years but sometimes thought about how little I was actually there. Now that it's close enough that I could walk there in 10 minutes, I don't really have a choice!

Basically, it's a mixed bag. Some of it is gritty and unpleasant, other parts look like any suburbia anywhere. As others have said, none of it is really unsafe. There's even a little bit of charm there -- the bike path, old converted mills. It is very far from my favorite place in the state, but if you're looking for a value, you could do a lot worse. • It’s not necessarily bad so to speak, but it’s still an old mill town that’s seen better days (much like Woonsocket).

  • If you’re expecting to use transit quite a bit, you’ll most likely want to stay around Arctic, as that’s where all the local routes meet (the express to Providence, and the locals to Woodland Apts. and Centre of New England, and to CCRI)

  • Piggybacking off the last point, if you’re looking for anything remotely walkable, I’d suggest staying around Arctic.

  • Lastly, be ready to run into a few nutjobs. Not the drug addict type, but rather the conspiracy theorist type. They’re few and far between (thank goodness), but I’ve met a few.

Depends on the part of town. Artic is a little tough sometimes. If you in Nottingham that’s the best part of town I’d say

Coventry is worse. Managed a Coventry location and all staff lived in Coventry. Never, ever, ever again.

Not in my experience, although it's kind of trashy as others have said. Certainly no worse than Pawtucket, Central Falls or Mt. unPleasant.

I live right near the town line. There’s better parts than others. It’s working class and a bit trashy lol.

I had an apartment near the mall, there was water leaking from a chimney they never filled in, they just put a wall up in front of it. Needless to say, there was a lot of mold. Plus the light switch bubbled sometimes when it rained. Not my greatest moment but what I can say is that I felt comfortable enough to frequent the bike path by myself so that’s something.

Look at recent technological advances. DIY, MAKERS etc.Have you noticed the circulator just got bottlenecked from the original design by extending crosswalks by effectively taking two lanes out out of the circulators original design for proper traffic flow. Emergency vehicles snowplows not to mention accidents. ETC. ETC. ETC.Please refer to DIAMOND INTERCHANGES to see what could have been. A great reduction in conflict points great many advantages for future road designs!

I have met many people there and I would say some sections are very nice. But if you have kids I would recommend anywhere else besides Oakland Beach. Cranston I would say overall is far safer at its lowest location.

Not sure if you’re joking because I hear the same things about Woonsocket. But I actually visited not too long ago and had a good time

I've lived in both (grew up in WW lived in Woon for a few years) and they're basically the same. Might be a bit more to do in Woon, but it kind of depends on where you work/go out to.

If your moving there from West Virginia it’s probably an upgrade in lifestyle, but if from any of the other lower 48 your trading down. We like to forget West Warwick exists.

There are worse places. Its lower on the list than most but I'd take it over Prov or Pawtucket, possibly even Johnston. It really depends on the area. Just about every city and town here has areas that are nice and areas that are not so nice. Just gotta look around. Unfortunately the real estate situation here has not improved very much so the options are limited. Be patient, keep looking if you have time. The only places I'd say absolutely try your hardest to stay away from us Prov and Pawtucket. WW, Warwick, and Johnston aren't bad, but they're not great. Cranston is obviously a good area too, but that's where it starts to get pricey. And then everywhere else expect it to be expensive.

Bottom line: Stay out of Providence and Pawtucket and you'll be fine

When you are seeking the lowest priced apartments in RI, you're going to end up in a shitty crime-ridden area.

I'd suggest doing whatever you can to increase your housing budget so that you can be in a safe area.

I don’t think that is necessarily a hard and fast rule, you can also just live somewhere uncool/undesirable. Which I don’t mind. I’m just trying to save for a house so as little money blown on rent as possible is ideal

West warwick, most of Cranston and Pawtucket are all garbage imo. If you're thinking about west warwick you might as well just go to Coventry or Warwick. Much nicer and safer and only a few minutes away.
