Every night in Rhode Island a whistle sounds to let you know another Pot Hole has formed. Only once did the whistle not sound. It was May 7th of 1981. Some believe the whistle was just being serviced and a Pot Hole was indeed still formed.

It's a train whistle.

The Amtrak Acela runs through RI, it tops out at like 148MPH, it’s the fastest train on US soil my dude.

The tracks are next to 95 on the bay side, you can hear the horns when they’re going over the bridge across the Pawtuxett river. Also Amtrak Regional service and at night they run freighters too, and at certain times the MBTA Commuter Rail goes as far south as Wickford Junction.

I call this train the “Bullet train”. At the Wickford Walmart you can see it rocket ship by, it’s truly a sight to behold. It’s otherworldly how fast it goes.

Waiting for the train at TF Green on the platform and seeing it whiz past is pretty great, but Attleboro and/or Mansfield stations are the best because they’re part of a miles long straightaway and they really just open them up there.

If you’re on the Commuter Rail and one passes, the air it deflects actually flexes all the window glass in as it goes by, and it sounds like someone slammed a door in another part of a house.

They’re getting all new trains for 2023 which are much more modern and expected to be able to take most of the route at an even higher speed; up to 165MPH through Attleboro/Mansfield.

Oh damn. So I'll be hearing this every single night then.

Yeah at night they might be required to sound the horn at certain locations (coming up on a bridge for instance) to warn anyone who might be there

In addition to Amtrak and MBTA Commuter Rail, the Providence and Worcester Railroad runs freight trains through Cranston. They normally run at night when there’s fewer passenger trains operating so that might well be what you’re hearing.

I don’t know but when I was growing up in Coventry every night at 8pm there was a whistle from the fire station and my parents would say “oh it’s the 8 o’clock whistle kids, time to go to bed”. So maybe it’s just the fire station telling you to go to bed.

The train whistle you are hearing is probably coming from a train.
