They should just have the students at RISD design something. This is low quality effort.

If I had my computer, I'd open up Photoshop right now and add a white layer over top of the shark background, then increase the transparency to whatever works. That at least solves the issue of clashing text and backgrounds.

Problem is that the RI plate contract is owned by 3M. They're low effort.

degggendorf t1_iyd4bi8 wrote

3M has no part in this design. They'll just print whatever we tell them.

The RISD submission for the regular plate was…underwhelming…If I recall correctly

They both look shitty AF

degggendorf t1_iycrsae wrote

They do seem to have an air of Lisa Frank about them.

I still think they're cool though.

16

needathneed t1_iyd3lt4 wrote

If they added Lisa frank rainbow it would be an improvement

13

dishwashersafe t1_iydwcay wrote

Are we talking about the same Lisa Frank? I wish I had photoshop at the moment... but just imagine the it with the shark being replaced by a smiling colorful dolphin (like this) and some rainbows.

2

degggendorf t1_iydwtxt wrote

Yeah, that's who I was thinking of too. Obviously the colors are a bit more subdued with the shark, but it seems to have that same kind of cartoony 3d effect with the animal mugging for the "camera".

edit: here's an example Lisa Frank that the shark feels similar to...the animal just floating in space, mouth open, angled toward the viewer, with other ocean accoutrements just kinda strewn about with wonky perspective.

itsallinthebag t1_iydpd8i wrote

I don’t get it. They just zoomed in a little on the other one. Those are the choices?

easedownripley t1_iycyj0i wrote

The fact that its really ugly and low effort makes it so much better and makes me want one

Mrsericmatthews t1_iyegche wrote

YES. I just texted a friend that it is the most ridiculous license plate I have ever seen and because of it, I want it. It doesn't even look real. 😂

We have the best art school in the country in our state and this is the best we could come up with?

The problem is that 3M owns the RI plate contracts... so you're stuck with their BS.

Now I'm wondering why stop, drop and roll was drilled into our heads as kids like we were one day gonna spontaneously combust but nothing on shark safety when we all lived at the beach in the ocean in the summer time

MavDrake OP t1_iyd1yvz wrote

Sharks are not that dangerous...

You're more likely to be killed by all of the following before a shark:

Accidental poisoning.

An air or space accident.

A bike accident.

Boating.

Cancer.

A car accident.

A champagne cork.

Contracting an infection in a hospital.

5

FunLife64 t1_iye9v9w wrote

RI beaches in particular don’t have dangerous sharks around in general. Thresher sharks are the most common…they are super shy and literally use their tail to hunt. Not their jaws. Great whites come off block island but not really in beach season. RI water is too warm during summer.

I'm so sick of this dmv. Patronizing the citizens with a new plate but won't let us have vanity plates.

6

captain_carrot t1_iydrgsw wrote

When did they stop allowing vanity plates??

3

wickedtachy t1_iydxxbw wrote

A while back you can google why. It has to do with the state removing a guys registration because AFTER they issued the plate they said oh wait we can't accept what he has. ( FKGAS- On a tesla)

3

wickedtachy t1_iye1g6q wrote

Yeah I know, they still make new plates everyday, and I keep seeing people with what look like new vanity plates or just new issued plates and its upsetting after application after application for a preferred plate. To get around the whole vanity plate thing

1

cowperthwaite t1_iye1syn wrote

Just wanted to put the links out there in case anyone else wanted to read the background.

2

wickedtachy t1_iye1zqk wrote

Appreciate it. It's baffling how little people are caring about this. Because of baby shark plates

1

Proof-Variation7005 t1_iyedskb wrote

I'd assume there's no real public outrage because people with vanity license plates are the least sympathetic humans ever.

I don’t mind it, but the text needs to be white or light gray.

5

degggendorf t1_iycrxx5 wrote

In the actual post form the org, they say "we don’t yet know how dark the state will allow the painting to be".

3

McGruffin t1_iyd2sp7 wrote

Good luck to anyone that needs to read that. Needs way more contrast between the letters and the background to be accessible.

5

JimmyHavok t1_iyd6xtx wrote

First one is unreadable at a distance, second one is only slight.y better. I'm guessing that gives the first one the push.

4

Ryland42 t1_iydcoz3 wrote

I doubt either of the designs are legal since neither are legible at 100' in accordance with RI law given his the blues are too close in hue.

2

degggendorf t1_iycsq01 wrote

Oh shit...the artist that drew the sharkscape - Paul McPhee - has some pre-existing RI connections.

He designed the album for the 1999 album Can't Get There From Here by.........Great White.

3

geffe71 t1_iyd5mw9 wrote

If this gets made then the DMV is fucked. I ordered the RI Home and Hospice plate and it never made it to the minimum so RIHH sent me an email with 2 options, full refund or the DMV fees go to charity

………But Elizabeth Biesel can get a custom Olympian plate and other can get limited run plates. GTFOH

3

heath730 t1_iydqvc4 wrote

FYI for the people in the thread commenting about the contrast / legibility - they “don’t know how dark the state will be allow it to be” yet. They are literally asking people to vote on close up shark vs full shark: https://www.facebook.com/atlanticsharkinstitute/posts/we-are-really-excited-to-share-that-the-state-of-ri-has-approved-the-atlantic-sh/1265619897313714/

And it does seem like the shark institute is handling the design, they had someone paint the shark, etc, 3M probably just handles production.

Edit: I also agree, not enough laser beam

3

AttackonRetail t1_iydt4h4 wrote

How is one of the options not jaws rising from the bottom of the plate? What a waste of an opportunity.

3

MavDrake OP t1_iydttqm wrote

I imagine there is some TM issues there and if anything MA would get those rights IMO.

I don’t love it, but I like it a sight more than the new ones we’ll be getting (or any of the existing alternative designs I’m aware of).

Plus, as a bank robber I really need a plate that will make my number illegible.

Might have to order one up.
