I think that Rhode Island has some of the best Italian bakeries in the northeast. My parents and grandparents were regulars at Superior Bakery and Calvitto's in Cranston, and De Petrillo's has become one of my favorites recently.

What are some of your favorite Rhode Island Italian bakeries? I'd love to try some new places!

Is that the place that used to be off Atwells Ave. near the entrance to rt. 10? If it is, I didn't even know they still existed. Used to be my favorite, them and the late, lamented Sciala's Golden Crust.

I love this place. But a heads up for someone looking to visit - I think of it more as a deli. They have some baked goods but minimal.

LaSalle Bakery in Providence. I prefer the one on Admiral St.

Tortankum t1_ixs5ttg wrote

No thank you. Lasalle is by far the most expensive and overrated bakery in the state. No Italian grandma would tell you to go to lasalle.

Go to Deluise, better and cheaper in every way.

I agree that LaSalle is overpriced, but I must admit I’ve never eaten anything from Deluise that impressed me. What would you recommend? Maybe I’ll swing by in the morning and give it another go.

Their donuts are so good. And there sweet bread? Forget about it

Excellent, thanks for the suggestions! Every once in a while I like to swing by a bakery for breakfast on the weekend. I need to do it more often. Chain donut shops aren’t the vibe.

my extended family who are generationally Providence and very Italian love LaSalle, for what it's worth. I've only been semi-recently introduced so I can't stake a claim

They aren’t terrible. It’s just overrated and overpriced.

I tried their zeppoles one year, and they were not good. It's weird that they get so much hype

Is LaSalle an Italian bakery?

NTSTwitch t1_ixrz332 wrote

Don’t quote me on it but I’m fairly certain it’s owned by an Italian family and they tend to have Italian items on offer regularly, but I’m not sure if it’s exactly what you’d call an Italian bakery by definition.

None of these suck - they're actually all good - we should be compiling the complete list of everyone of them that's better than average - they're going away one by one..... Crugnale's had great sheet pizza.
