Switch to solar. Buy a pellet stove.

I got enough people knocking on my door about solar lol

So get it

There is plenty of sunlight. Source: I got mine this year.

Trees?

Indeed

Looking into it. They could be anywhere from 6-12 out

Yeah, it took a while for me. Around 5-6 mo before they had everything ready to start installing.

You can remove trees.
GrapeRello t1_iylxum9 wrote
Cutting trees and getting solar is expensive. People having a hard time with monthly bills don’t have money for solar or major tree work lol. Not to mention half those people are probably renting.
degggendorf t1_iymcddx wrote
It's also a bit counterproductive too; those trees are shading your house and keeping it cooler in the summer. Cutting them down for solar, you're generating power, but then turning around to use that power to cool your house that's now baking in the sun.
You'll still come out ahead, but imo there are better ways. Community solar and grid solar make way more sense to me...rather than putting expensive small arrays high up on roofs and removing trees from neighborhoods, put a big field of them on already blighted land. Cap off a landfill, cover it with panels. No one wants to live on a landfill, and there was no nature there before either. It's a win-win.
Distinct-Ad5751 t1_iyly7ed wrote
True. It’s not an option for everyone but it was worth it for us. We have electric heat in a 2800 sq ft home - taking down 3 trees was worth it.
Distinct-Ad5751 t1_iymordh wrote
Why am I being downvoted? I’m on a half acre with loads of trees and we removed 3 overgrown oaks to allow for more sun.

Everyone’s experience is different, bud. What worked for you may not be an option for everyone else.

Pellets are way too expensive it doesn’t make sense to install a pellet stove.
Icutthemetal t1_iym1bj7 wrote
Might want to double check that. 1 40 lb bag can heat your house for 24 hours on average. 300$ a pallet gives you 50 bags for 300 or 6 dollars a bag. Heating your house for 6 dollars a day is pretty good given gasoil prices right now.
Null_Error7 t1_iym63ky wrote
Let’s do math. 1 ton of pellets provides 16,500,000 BTUs of heat and costs $350. At 75% efficiency that is 35,400 BTUs per dollar.
An 18k BTU mini split at 75% efficiency in the winter is 13,400 BTUs at 1,300 watts which costs $0.26 or 51,500 BTUs per dollar. Mini split is cheaper for heat.
Icutthemetal t1_iym6pqc wrote
Not arguing that. Argument was oil/gas vs pellet. Also I own a mini split. The heat just isn't the same feeling. The house cools quicker when it's off and it creates drafts because it's moving heat from one place to another instead of generating it. That's why I bought a pellet stove anyway.
Null_Error7 t1_iym86ed wrote
Even when compared to gas, it would take a long time to break even.

Even if it takes 5 years to pay off it's still paying for itself eventually. Not to mention the 26% Tax credit right now

Counterpoint: it doesn't address op's question.
They're asking why, not how.

I answered that as well.

I don't think "because you don't have solar and a pellet stove" is really a helpful answer. As do others, evidently.

degggendorf t1_iyn55s8 wrote
Ohhh lol it's a bill credit that made their bill so high. That makes sense.
