Rates are up ~40% on electric and ~10% on natural gas.
Have you broken down your price difference to see what's rate increases and what's usage increase? That would be a good first step. Then compare to the same month last year, being mindful of billing days in the period (it can be different) and weather.

TBH I'm not sure gas users are going to make out any better than oil users this winter... I keep my apartment at around 62 and filled up my tank before the cold started... I haven't even gotten to 7/8ths of a tank yet. If I was heating with gas though I probably would be spending $$$ more. My apartment is also in a really old ass building in a historical district, I do what I can to insulate but there isn't a lot to be done to modernize it.

Absolutely 100% true . Oil burns slow. Iāve been on oil the past few years and it is 100% better than a gas meter. National grid are the biggest thieves, one less meter for them the better iMO . Itās easier to control oil usage , oil has gone down on my last two deliveries Iām getting a delivery tomorrow and itās even cheaper than last time.

You have to burn 1.5 times the amount of natural gas compared to oil when heating your home. Oil is 140,000 btu per gallon and natural gas is 90k when you convert it to cubic ft which is how they issue it on our bills. I miss dealing with my local oil company compared to a huge corporation. I always had someone to speak to that knew my account and home, versus someone who has no idea. My oil company always helped with budget payments and even allowed me around the holiday when I needed to replace my system to finance it at zero percent with them for a year and I never went without heat. Switching to natural gas might be my biggest regret. I had a smell of gas and I called them they came and shut the meter off and told me to call a company and have them come find the leak and make a repair and then to call back in for them to turn it back on after the repairs were made. After having it repaired that night by my service man, I called it and was told theyād get someone out the next day between 8 am and 8 pm! I went there entire night and next day without heat and they couldnāt care less.

Gas heat at 68 during the day, 65 at night upstairs where we spend our time. Downstairs is at 58. Total square footage about 1700. Had RISE come in spring of 21, insulation was done. Before the credit the gas bill this month was $100.

Check to see if the gas is actual read or predicted. I had a crazy bill one year turned out they predicted my uses. Their predicted use carried me through the winter one year.

Same boat, $118 for gas and we barely use the heat. We have a wood burning stove that runs all day, the heat goes on only at night after the stove burns out. Granted, we have a 1920 house with only partially modernized insulation and a single zone, itās never been the most efficient.

i have a brand new high efficiency furnace and hot water heater & typically pay 260 ish in gas monthly during the very coldest times of the year. 50 $ a month in the summer.

It sounds like you pay for gas by usage. I also have a gas furnace and water heater an a few years ago I switched to the payment plan, so instead of the bill jumping up and down depending on the temps I pay an average of $110 per month all year long.

Cutting trees and getting solar is expensive. People having a hard time with monthly bills donāt have money for solar or major tree work lol. Not to mention half those people are probably renting.

It's also a bit counterproductive too; those trees are shading your house and keeping it cooler in the summer. Cutting them down for solar, you're generating power, but then turning around to use that power to cool your house that's now baking in the sun.
You'll still come out ahead, but imo there are better ways. Community solar and grid solar make way more sense to me...rather than putting expensive small arrays high up on roofs and removing trees from neighborhoods, put a big field of them on already blighted land. Cap off a landfill, cover it with panels. No one wants to live on a landfill, and there was no nature there before either. It's a win-win.

Might want to double check that. 1 40 lb bag can heat your house for 24 hours on average. 300$ a pallet gives you 50 bags for 300 or 6 dollars a bag. Heating your house for 6 dollars a day is pretty good given gasoil prices right now.

Letās do math. 1 ton of pellets provides 16,500,000 BTUs of heat and costs $350. At 75% efficiency that is 35,400 BTUs per dollar.
An 18k BTU mini split at 75% efficiency in the winter is 13,400 BTUs at 1,300 watts which costs $0.26 or 51,500 BTUs per dollar. Mini split is cheaper for heat.

Not arguing that. Argument was oil/gas vs pellet. Also I own a mini split. The heat just isn't the same feeling. The house cools quicker when it's off and it creates drafts because it's moving heat from one place to another instead of generating it. That's why I bought a pellet stove anyway.
