Hey all...I'm thinking about joining LA Fitness, because I need a gym and they are within walking distance of my house. Proximity is huge for me, so I can overlook a lot for that, but the reviews are really brutal. There are some positive reviews but they are obviously planted (users only having one comment histories, etc). I'll check it out in person but I am really curious what the average user thinks, as I know people are far more likely to complain than praise online. My needs are simple, primarily elliptical machine. Thanks!

I stopped going there after they redesigned the inside with a bunch of shit that no one wanted. Used to be very roomy with a great layout then eSporta came in and ruined it.

I was a member there for several years. I havent been there since the covid bs started but it was pretty nice when I was. Got everything in there, basketball court, Olympic pool, hot tub, upstairs cardio, downstairs weights and spin room. Smoothie bar. A bit pricey tho. And it pissed me off when it was packed in there.. After covid I dumped my membership and built my own gym. No more payments and no more people!

I know gyms used to do those temporary passes for a week. Maybe try that out? They typically have it on their website. Not sure if they do it as much anymore but worth a shot, or even calling to ask if they do it.

Thanks for all the input everyone. In case any future readers want to know, I went there last night and did not see it as badly as all the negative reviews had led me to expect. I dealt with two people, both of whom were pleasant and attentive with no hard sell. It didn’t strike me as unusually dirty, just a typical chain gym. Could certainly have been a little nicer but wasn’t off-putting to me. I didn’t try every piece of equipment but I didn’t see any out of order signs either. I was there on a Friday evening just after five and it was busy but not uncomfortably so. I took them up on the offer of a free pass, which they extended from a couple of days to a full week after I informed them I was concerned about how busy it would be on weekdays. I’ll give it a shot and revise this post if I decide not to join, but I’m pretty sure I will. It’s not the prettiest gym but it has what I want and is super convenient for me so I’m hopeful.

I went there for the first 8 months this year and then left. There were fights, dirty tissues left everywhere, no one wipes anything down, people bring speakers and play music over the gym music, the staff is barely there or actively working, it smells like feet by the free weight rack, no one reracks their plates or dumbbells, when machines break they are out of commission for months. Last time I gave it a shot again about 4 weeks ago, 5 out of the 6 sinks in the bathroom were out of service.

Give it time. You will see how filthy the place is.

My favorite was when I was in the hot tub, and an older gentleman got out of it WITH SNEAKERS ON. That was the last time I used the water facilities. Also there's drain flies all in the showers.

Honestly it’s kinda meh. I have gone there a few times as a guest and it did it’s job. I wouldn’t say it’s super awful but at the same time I wouldn’t say it’s great either. I don’t have any experience with the machines tho so I don’t have any feedback on that. I too have been considering getting a membership there but I’ve held back bc of the reviews as well, in terms of them being shady and not letting you cancel or just being problematic when it comes to money & customer service in general. They have a free 3 day guest pass thing that you can get on their website, I would suggest using that and seeing how you like it before committing. They will try to sweet talk you tho so just be prepared lol

So I used to go a few months ago and it’s just like every other gym. They do have a lot of machines but it gets PACKED. After 3:45-4pm it’s busy until close. They keep the place pretty clean and I always used to see the cleaning guy walking around. The bar area to buy milkshakes seemed pretty clean too. Area isn’t too nice but I never had an issue with my car. I never showered there so I can’t comment on that. Seems like every other gym imo but that’s just me

Are you referring to the Garden City location in Cranston? That's a nice area.

It's actually the esporta I use that gym over edge cause I like the amenities more and less intimidating than edge. The cleanliness is at an okay level minus the outdated and dirty showers. It is way better than the esporta in Warwick though, that place barely has any cell service and it's dirtier.
