My girlfriend is from California and wants to bring home some Rhody themed gifts for Christmas. Her grandma loves trying different seasonings, so we are thinking about that route. Any suggestions on a Rhode Island-themed seasoning? I know there are tons of Rhode Island-based spices companies, but any Rhody specific seasonings?

RI pepper co! They make a Narragansett Bay seasoning that's like old bay but spicier! You can get it at South Country Organics and Bulk Food in Wakefield

edit: ocean state pepper co. Thanks for adding the link!

Really you can give anything and make it Rhode Island themed by just talking about what used to be where the present is now

Bells Seasoning is hard to find in my experience out of the New England. (It’s a wee bit different than poultry seasoning but not by much, just one spice)

I wrote about food-specific gifts you can buy that are from Rhode Island for my weekly food and dining newsletter with the Globe. Here it is: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2022/12/12/metro/one-of-a-kind-food-gifts-everyone-your-list/

Here's parts of that article/ newsletter here:

  • Finishing salt from local waters beats anything you’re buying in bulk, elevating your dishes and craft cocktails. Hand harvested from Brenton Reef along Ocean Drive, Newport Sea Salt Co. follows a traditional and unhurried process of making small-batched, pure and natural sea salt where nothing is added or taken away.
  • No one has time to make everything from scratch at home. But you can say “no” to the big brands you’ve seen in every home kitchen for the last few decades. Grab sauces and other BBQ goodies from the Backyard Food Company in Warwick, seasoning from Ocean State Pepper Co., fresh pasta from Priva Farina in Warren, and hot sauce from Rhed’s inside the Farm Fresh building in Providence. Bonus: Gastro’s Craft Meats usually has sampler sizes and gift baskets.

Good quality sea salt is one, we are the Ocean State after all. Maldon can probably be found at the olive oil joint on Hope in PVD if it's still there. Dill is pretty prominent around here too.

you could overnight delivery(pricey I know) but you could deliver a full clam bake

and an extra bonus booster would be a sachum wearing wampum beads who could direct tha show on how these things go

but please, if you go the sachum route, be sure to buy the holy dude a return ticket back to his tepee

Well. Hmm. If you expand that to east coast / new england how about maple flavored sugar and Old Bay?

Old Bay is Maryland though, no?

Yes. If you want to do an East Coast gift you could include Maryland’s Old Bay and Maine Maple-flavored sugar. Just never heard of any seasoning that is specifically RI.
