I know it’s the last day before winter break, but I thought this storm was only going to be rain and some strong wind gusts. Is the rain and chance of power outages that severe? Some people are treating it like it’s snow.
The couple teachers and staff at my daughter's school I talked to said it was a concern of losing power due to the wind.
In rural areas, wind and ice can mean widespread power outages. Being the last day for a lot of districts it was going to be a movie day anyway so hell with it, not worth the risk.
pretty much. the last day before xmas break was watching some kind of holiday movie and singing "jingle bells" and shit when I was a kid.
My schools back in VA always scheduled the day before break as a half day and just did shit in the auditorium or movie day in the classrooms since half the kids werent showing up anyways.
The thing is, after the storm, we're looking at zero degree wind chills. Without power, that's brutal.
Our school system starts vacation tomorrow....

Cumberland closed schools because if someone breathes on the power lines the wrong way the town loses power. Expected gusts will definitely cause some outages there.

And flooding. I'm going to work from home tomorrow, don't want to get stuck if 195 is closed again. Was lucky to just miss it last time.
Thank goodness I built a few windmills recently to generate electricity.
I feel like the roads are gonna be fucked with trees and there will be power outages throughout the day... hopefully not overnight.

60 knot wind gusts will do some damage to trees. Stay off the back roads if you can.

Last time we had Tropical storm Irene in 2011, the majority of the state was without power for days. 70mph winds is an issue, especially with the plummeting temp drop that came with. #okboomer
Wind of 20-30 mph (with reported gusts of up to 50/60) & rain. Far cry from a hurricane. I’m sry, is the state destroyed yet?!? #keeplivinginfear

And they were only reported gusts. Inland was just up to 50mph. That still too scary?
Just a guess… When there are high winds in rural school districts, trees fall and roads become impassable… Buses can’t complete their routes… Karen’s freak out and call the schools to complain.
Gonna be fine , teachers just like more time off… like when they all wanted to work from home after covid. Tough working 180 days a year.
