I was reminiscing about First Night in Providence. Anything like that around anymore? Google didn’t turn up much.

It was great, wasn't it? I was actually part of a Poetry Slam team that performed one year at the Cable Car (RIP).

I was really sad to learn that it just petered out in Providence, well before the pandemic. There just wasn't the critical mass of people who supported it.

I feel badly about the people posting here and on the RI sub asking about what to do on NYE.

Someone did suggest fireworks at Rocky Point Park. Might do that. But First Night was really something at its peak.

First Night was like PVD Fest but in December. It was marvelous.

It feels like with the food truck culture and community, this could be organized and made possible again. There is no lack of arts and food in this state.

Was it previously funded by the city of providence?

This should make a strong come back. We need this more than we need more festivals in the summer.

First night was absolutely amazing! Such a fun time. It felt like the whole city participated. I was thinking about first night about a week ago. So sad.

I was part of the group that started it. Lots of art, fireworks, it was a blast. Miss it. It was started by artists and we had a mayor ( Cianci) who just did everything to promote the city.

First night was chosen but some later it was some change, legal or something, and it became bright night. I wasn't involved then. Wish I had more info for you.
