For comparison sake, I grew up on the North Shore of MA and as a family we'd go digging for these. We pronounced it Ko-hog (long O)

My friend's mother is like "sha - dees!!!" The exclamation marks are necessary, as well. She's got the true Portuguese umph to it with the D sound. I love RI!!!
