$1k? Do you drive a Maserati? Safelite did mine for like $260

Some modern windshields have all kinds of sensors built in and therefore cost a lot.

It has a lot to do with the make and model of your car. So without that information this post is useless.

I found Safelite to be the most expensive. We used Patriot Auto Glass and it was half the price of Safelite.

I second this, they did my windshield and it’s held up great over the past few years. Forgot how much it was but way less then 1k

Also going to recommend Patriot Auto Glass. We've used them twice in the past ten years (different vehicles). They're very reasonably priced, friendly, and they will come to replace your windshield at work if you need them to!

Stay away from Safelite and Payless Auto Glass, they've both fucked stuff up and refused to even entertain the idea of taking responsibility for fixing it.

Payless used their reciprocating saw scraper tool and melted the interior window trim on my wife's car and wouldn't even let her finish explaining what happened, let alone fix their mistake.

Safelite lost the trim on my car, and just haphazardly gobbed in more sealant. I leaks.

Also, be careful of those companies masquerading under different names. I ended up with Payless after calling the phone number for the legit local glass shop I had used in the past. Payless evidently bought the number and hid their company name until the Payless van showed up in our driveway.

I'd call the dealer for your brand of car and ask who they use for glass.

Windshield replacement is usually covered in RI Insurance so yeah...anyone reputable company literally. Call your insurance company!

Initial-South5908 OP t1_j5nesiq wrote

Mine doesn’t cover it! I have USAA

8

MavDrake t1_j5o8ht6 wrote

Drop them then... free replacement is like a basic coverage for other companies.

Edit: I got rid of USAA over 10 years ago to include banking because they were such BS. Been with GEICO since moving back to RI.

the_regal_retard t1_j5pf7uh wrote

What happened to them? They used to be good but they absolutely suck now. I still have them but I'm honestly thinking about switching over to Navy Federal (who I think offers GEICO)?

1

MavDrake t1_j5pg4zd wrote

Yeah I've had Navy Federal since I was a little kid and they get a discount through Geico.

I really don't know what happened to USAA. They were the only insurance company that would insure me as an 18 year old stationed in Germany with a brand new car. As time went on they just become more difficult to work with, their car buying service really sucked as it was more expensive to shop through them than to actually walk on the lot. Also their insurance kept creeping up year after year and their customer service sucked.

andasound t1_j5ob6ou wrote

My USAA coverage has windshields included. That being said, I used “Affordable Auto Glass” and their charge was less than my deductible. He came right to my house and replaced it in my driveway.

My insurance company is paying for Satellite to replace my windshield on Thursday. No cost for me.

SluggDaddy t1_j5oe4j0 wrote

If it’s offered (and it should be) still have to check the option box. It costs almost nothing to add to insurance (Amica) but I left it off thinking it wouldn’t be a thing and save some money then I got stuck with a $450 bill for a replacement when that would’ve cost like $5.80 a month on top of my premium.

I suggest after this incident calling your insurer and asking about adding the coverage.

I went to Safelite in New Bedford, and my insurance (GEICO) covered it. All I had to pay was the deductible on my plan which was $50. I would definitely look into what your insurance covers

3

KennyWuKanYuen t1_j5pxk1w wrote

Doesn’t that usually spike your premium though?

My dad had a dented bumper and was told if he filed through insurance, his premium would go up regardless of whether there was another party involved. Same with the windshield on our other car.

brianv83 t1_j5pysxw wrote

I had the windshield repaired by Safelite on my 2017 Wrangler back in 2018 through insurance, it was dime size puck mark, and when I went to change insurance companies last year it was listed as a claim and raised my premium everywhere I was quoted. Had I known that I would have just paid out of pocket for it.

2

KennyWuKanYuen t1_j5pzh8l wrote

I thought so.

My parents have Amica and they told us it would be cheaper in the long run to pay out of pocket for a replacement than to file a claim since it’ll be on their records and will just cost more every year for a reason they couldn’t even control.

2

SupermarketFluid3144 t1_j5pzkcx wrote

Nope didn’t change my premium at all. GEICO has a windshield glass program so I did the claim through them first. If they were able to fix the crack it would have been free but it was too big so I needed a whole new windshield, and I only paid the $50 deductible

1

Rickshmitt t1_j5nwfh0 wrote

Safelite will be cheaper. I got mine done on a 2017 taco a year or so back, was maybe $400? A glass place wanted like goddamn $800 for a cheaper window too

2

VirtualPear2505 t1_j5r9zy7 wrote

Try old fashioned Google, not kidding lots of places repair/replace Windshields. Also check out your car's insurance policy, lots of companies cover windshields from damaged to total replacement good luck 🤞

WTFisThatSMell t1_j5qmmb4 wrote

Call your insurance company. I'm with metlife and they give me one a year free if needed. Safelite came to my place and did it in my parking spot. Did not add anything to my monthly premium.
