My wife was a contractor for 2 one year stints over the course of 3 years. In that time was the last major layoff. They let go people that would have taken a bullet for the company just because it seemed. No one was safe. They know people love working for them because the nostalgia and use it to their advantage.
And let’s not forget to mention the departments staffed by a rotating cycle of contractors. We know people that have been back 4-6 times for the same position.

I applied for a graphic design manager there and they said anyone below a manager level is a contractor. That is insane that a company would operate like that - so no one gets benefits or health insurance below a manager level? It didn’t seem legal to me, or if it is, then it is just shitty of the company. I didn’t get the job and was happy I didn’t.

maybe in that department that's not correct for any other department.

It's also one of very few "stable" jobs for creatives especially around here. If you want to be a freelance artist of one sort or another you can but it's ridiculously hard to get a job with benefits in that space. So many of the people that work there are absolutely crushed and it can be an absolutely life shattering time for them. Engineers can engineer other places, PM's and sales and marketing can go find other places, not many places for people that love to create.

After over a decade at Hasbro I got used to the panic attacks. Very toxic environment. Managements only idea to turn things around is to keep cutting jobs. Sad because when I started it was at the tail end of it being an ok place to work. Once Goldner took over it became a corporate hellhole. Every day I am thankful I don't work there anymore.
Fellatio_Sanzz t1_j63s073 wrote
I’ve often wanted to work here because of the environment and thought that working with toys and creatives would be fun. I am bummed to hear that is not the reality.

It was stressful when I worked there last year as a 1 year temp before they dumped me, but I can say I made some lifelong friends in my department, and the good times were always great there. Unfortunately the last few months I hear they’ve been burning alive.

That isn't even super nuts as far as CEO pay. It's still a profitable company.

They’ve had issues for awhile but I don’t know if milking their IPs through Wizards is going to play out like they think it will. Theres plenty of workarounds and loopholes for official D&D products, and half the people Ive played MTG with use proxy decks or proxy the most valuable cards.
wlphoenix t1_j61r9sc wrote
They also recently burned an absurd amount of goodwill w/ recent proposed changes to D&D licensing, leading to almost anyone they could partner with in the tabletop RPG space to view them in a hostile light. Which will just lead them to leaning on M:tG even harder, continuing to make the product saturation problem worse.

Im curious how this goes if they dont get a reversal. To be blunt theyre a flagship firm for Rhode Island as far as notoriety goes but their headquarters is in a crap location. I wouldnt be surprised if they eventually try to get state assistance for an HQ re-siting that incidentally entails downsizing.

Flagship from a publicity perspective... They already have a bunch of tax deals....

Yep. We're basically watching them slaughter their Golden goose in real time.

There were already proposals from major shareholders to spin Wizards out. It'll be interesting to see what happens to Hasbro if that happens, as Wizards seems to be the vast majority of Hasbro's revenue.

I was there last year to witness the beginning of the end. Was such a fun company to work for until you see past all the glitter they throw in your face. They’ve been using nothing but Temps for years, to the point I’ve heard they had lawsuits over it.
And having people who work there for nearly 30 years get let go less than a year before retirement is really rough. No pizza party, just grab your shit right now and get out.
AdeptnessNo8130 t1_j63v8kv wrote
Plus some departments are already skeleton crews at this point, idk how they’ll survive even more layoffs.
pirategaspard t1_j63xz2d wrote
Yep they laid off all the gray hairs first. Saw that happen during multiple layoffs. Pretty much anyone who knew anything is gone.
NashiraTremont t1_j6511bq wrote
Having worked for their subsidiary company Wizards of the Coast, I can tell you that the highest paid go first. I was one of such. This was back quite a few years ago now. But the let go was right after Christmas. Apparently my manager fought to keep me (and the others that were "laid off") until after the holidays. January 6th BAM! The second I signed off, my passwords were changed. There was no saving emails, screen shots, nothing. Done. All to save a few pennies on their bottom line so the CEO got his bonus.

Really interesting to hear the feedback about working for Hasbro. From the outside looking in I had always had the impression that they were the best place to work of the major RI corporations (CVS, Citizens, Fidelity, IGT and Hasbro). Seems like I was mistaken.

I've posted in this thread a bunch because I have a handful of friends that work there or have worked there. It's a good place to work in the day to day, they have pretty good benefits, give good pay for the type of work it is, half day fridays all year and any time a movie is out they work on they go for free. It's a dieing industry in the last 5 years as everyone is only using apps and phones and it's a big public company, so the anxiety of every quarter seeing what happens really messes with the people.

Also, as I said in another thread many people that lose their jobs are not in positions or types of work that they can easily move somewhere else and losing that job can pretty much ruin them, so it gets very personal.
AdeptnessNo8130 t1_j6obcin wrote
As far as I know they scrapped the moviegoing, and basically all the other fun events when Covid happened and half the company went remote.

With Transformers fans, its perfectly ok to go to aliexpress and buy knock off bootleg transformers. No one will shit on you for doing it. Everyone would prefer the real thing, but sometimes availability or price are concerns. These are mostly with out of production stuff, so not sure how much it affects hasbros bottom line, but there is no respect of intellectual property as a lot of it is branded Transformers.
