From the article:

"By Allison Shinskey

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The state is seeking ideas for the Shephard Building on Westminster Street as the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) and the University of Rhode Island (URI) Providence Campus prepare to move out.

Laura Hart, a spokesperson for the Department of Administration, said the six-story building is worth roughly $10 million.

Hart said the building once housed a department store but has been owned by the state since 1995."

I'd just recommend it remain the RIDE/URI Providence building. It worked well for that.

13 min walk to the Amtrak, bars, shopping, and restaurants?

Apartments or condos.

More walkable and less traffic: yes, please.

Let’s not kid ourselves, it’ll just end up being apartments/condos. The illusion of choice…

sell it or tear it down and sell the lot
State should not be in the business of figuring out what should go there

The state owns it (since 1995) and has an obligation to serve the best interests of the community/state (though it doesn't always meet that expectation). As long as they get a fair price for it, I think they should give some consideration to community needs and what the space will be used for.

Please. I’ve been going to raves in providence since before you got out of elementary school. Tight crew is fantastic and I’m friends with a lot of them, but the scene has seriously dwindled. They are the last bastion of what once was. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Why are URI and RIDE moving out? that was a good use for that building. Ideally, they would stay there.

agreed, downtown needs another 2,000+ units immediately — if they were available, they would be filled. there’s no way to build $1,000/units anymore, inflation is too high, we need to stop wasting time holding up projects, we need more housing right now.

Adding more housing, in theory, should lower housing prices by making supply closer to demand, lowering the cost of living.

Cost of living is a complex issue and the state can't waive a wand, push a button, or pass a bill that will automatically lower it.
