Has anyone else also seen the jump in their gas bill? I thought last month was just an anomaly, but looks like it’s persisting even tho I made sure to reduce my thermostats and use as little gas as possible.
Anyone else noticed this from their RIE gas bill compared to Nov of 2022?

They keep electing the same officials and expect change.
I find it so absolutely incredible that there are still people out there that think elected officials somehow control the price of energy.
But then again, I probably shouldn’t be surprised.

My fiancée and I had an eye-popping bill and we got someone from RIE to look at our meter. It turns out that we had a gas leak. The rates are still insane but always a good idea to get it looked at

We're not "sending" it, they're BUYING IT. Like every commodity, the highest bidder gets it. They paid more than local companies were willing to pay. It's capitalism
I converted my system from oil to natural gas over the summer, and have been quite pleased with my bill. The last few years I've been paying between $225 and $250/month on a budget plan with my oil company, so my most recent bill of $175 was still lower than what I'm used to!
Mine was like $214. And I’m hardly at home!!!
I started using my programmable thermostat (changing +/- 2°F), and have a super-insulated 40 gal hot water tank that only loses 1°F/hr. It wasn't the cheapest system, but it's saving me money every month (so far). Hope you can figure out where you can cut some cost!
Maybe you live in an older house like mine I know mine is not insulated well and I paid 208 this month. Last yr at same time..you can see this if you have an online account it was 160
I hope that we build more nuclear. Unfortunately, lots of people are buying electric cars, this perversely will push up natural gas prices because of all the power to charge those suckers. Imagine too that electric trucks when they start to roll probably won't be paying fuel taxes...
Natural gas rates from RIE went up about 11% starting Nov 1, from $0.6137 over the summer/fall to $0.6831/therm.
Naturally, usage will be increasing as the weather (slowly) gets colder...it takes more energy to keep your house 65 degrees when it's 20 degrees outside than when it's 50 degrees out.

I understand the supply problem. I want to know why the charges they profit from have increased.
I think I can answer part of that.
For natural gas, all of November through April is considered peak season, which is accurate as far as usage goes. Why distribution costs more when we use more and there's a reverse economy of scale? I don't know.
I also don't know what exactly the Distribution Adj Charge means, nor why it's almost doubled. Ultimately because the PUC approved it, but I haven't read any report or seen any meeting minutes it anything to explain it.

Something I found with Rhode Island Energy, you can create an account at internet.speedpay.com and pay your energy bills with a credit card and they don't charge a convenience fee. Unlike the national grid site where credit cards were charged a convenience fee. I know its not a huge break, but sometimes it helps not having to have the cash come out of your bank and use credit with no fee.
I always pay off my credit card so I guess it wouldn’t make much of a difference… but that is a good suggestion. Thank you!

Mine was $109 this month. I have gas for heat and hot water.
For Nov-Dec I had a $250 gas bill with the thermostat at 62. Dropped it to 58 for our mild Dec-Nov and it’s $280. Stupid. It’s a squeeze.
Is there no reprieve? And I see the Fed touting that inflation is going down. Bullshit I’m gonna have to ask my employer for a raise to pay my utility bills.

I’m just curious to see how long the people are going to shut up and take it in until they start to push back. Sure now the M2 supply is still high lots of people have a padded savings account, but that’s fast dwindling and it’s starting to eat into the basic needs of Maslow’s hierarchy
I don’t know how the elderly on fixed incomes are doing it they’re going to have to choose between eating or heating. This is brutal, but people keep voting the same way and expect a different outcome is literally the definition of insanity. Our leaders don’t care we’re cattle they need our tax money, and clearly no one wants to fix the energy crisis, which would be easily fixed if we opened up the United States capacity to create energy. But that’s not gonna happen for another at least two years. Economies going off the cliff it’s like eight or nine bucks for eggs I live in Warwick I’d buy a chicken if I could they won’t let us. I have a wood stove and natural gas we’ve been running the woodstove and our bills still double what it should be.

No we can’t have chicken coups in Warwick but Coventry or Exeter you can. Anyway your right I’ve been using my wood stove nightly and still my gas bill is double it’s unbelievable that people are ok with this. Most people I know are not but if you blame the administration or any leaders you get censored or outright banned on Reddit. Doesn’t matter if you’re Republican or Democrat we’re all getting hit the same way in the pocketbook hard. I have upvoted you, but just give it time. And the reason I know it’s bullshit is because the significant increase was in the delivery charges and not the actually cost of gas itself. These fuckers took over national grid (which is already private) and trying to make more profit for their shareholders by squeezing the citizens by tacking on more fees for “delivery”. All the while getting subsidies from the govt
If you are just noticing this now, it’s hard for people to empathize.
The energy company spent ad money explaining the issue and alerting their customers. The State Dept. of Public Utilities held hearings on the matter and did its best to alert consumers.
We get it, it’s annoying, lots of people literally can’t afford it. But this all goes back to October. So if you are just catching on now then people are rightfully going to think you are uninformed or ignorant of the problem. The added cost in fact has nothing to do with the local energy providers and has to do with the regional energy grid managers passing on cost.
So yeah, it sucks. But this exact post happens twice a week and most of the time from people who don’t understand anything other than , “My EnERgy BiLL wEnt UP MERRR!!!”

If you are like most of us and this added cost is seriously a problem, but you can absorb it, know most of the western world is with you or has it worse. Look into home heating costs year over year in Europe. Then look at the UK.
RI does have it bad, we are one of the most expensive energy markets in the USA, but it’s as bad or worse for most of the world.

Thank you for your kind words and the offer to help. I appreciate it. I can absorb the cost but it severely affects my savings rate and I’ll have to cut down on some other expenses.
I’m fine with the hate, but I just hope people can open their eyes and see that it is not something that is unavoidable. We have one of the largest natural gas reserves on the world, even with siphoning some to Europe.
But since the industry has been privatized, profiteering has made all the CEOs blame the Ukraine war and political policies to purposely inflate the prices when they don’t really need to be. We the middle class are the ones paying for their brownie points to their shareholders.
Maybe the govt is partially to blame but it’s the corporates that lobby to them and swing policies in their favor for increasing prices. I don’t expect people on here to hear what I say but one can only wish.

Ughh, I don’t have the energy to explain this again. It’s so much more complicated then what you describe and the cost increases aren’t coming from corporate greed or the war in Ukraine. The US is literally pumping out NG as fast as possible.
The cost to get that NG out of the ground and deliver it to your house or your closest generation station is the problem.

It’s been going up since Biden declared that he was at war with the fossil fuel industry. Also, the Russians war against Ukrainian has caused the price to go up. Especially in Europe.
He’s at war with it but he’s losing. Just read a good article about Chesapeake Energy coming back from bankruptcy. They are at record natural gas production now. Unfortunately for New England there isn’t pipeline capacity to get it here. So it goes elsewhere and a more and more will be getting shipped to Europe as they build the terminals to fill the demand.
