You don’t get a breakdown from the school? I got a bill each term but it would have a break down that had tuition, room, meal plan, student life fees, whatever else. And every school I know of has you buy your own books

You can typically get a line item break down, because that is required for tax purposes, because some parts can be written off while others can't. But at least at the university I work at, it all on one bill, they aren't different bills, and you don't typically pay per service.
There are many schools now that include lab fees and books in the base tuition. Many schools have started advertising it to show there are no "hidden fees" like the extra $1000 a year in books I had to pay 20 years ago. There are also numerous classes now that are using open-source digital textbooks. I know a few instructors that have switched over and have been very happy with the results.
