I think it’s because there’s no “eez” sound at the end. “Twent-eez, Thirt-eez, Fort-eez…”

Maybe it's a dialect thing?

certainly rolls off the tongue better than "first decade of the 2000s" which is what I usually say :/

Gonna be real weird when this decade is over and "the twenties" becomes shorthand for a few years ago rather than a historical time
