no, i don't. to me, it's the same as "would you love me if i were a worm?" type questions. sorry sofía, but realistically, if you were a worm i would either put you in my compost bin or feed you to my magpie friends.

I mean, you can choose that gun option once, but depending on who’s behind the gun, you’ll get two bullets so it can be ruled a suicide.

nucumber t1_iu4dz1y wrote

are you just now thinking this through?

why do you think someone would hold a gun to your head if not to threaten to shoot you

TacoThingy t1_iu4ewcc wrote

Well yes but no. Look at something like Sophie’s choice. You get to pick one of two kids, or you don’t pick and you all get shot and killed.

seemypinky t1_iu4eyi3 wrote

I don’t think people are forgetting that, they just assume that in the vast majority of circumstances getting shot in the head would not be the option most people would choose

Uh, I don't think anyone with a gun to their head is forgetting that getting shot is an option. It's an option no one wants.

I mean get shot or answer often times a stupid/embarrassing question? Like I don't think much people would rather die then answer a question

13

possiblycrazy79 t1_iu4ixrf wrote

Not really. "Shoot me then" is a common answer that I myself & many others have used

15

Cleaglor t1_iu4jfzo wrote

In real life though, like a hostage situation, that "question" is more often than not something that they want to hear or you're getting shot, so it's not really a question at all. The question is do you wanna live or not, and how far are you going to go for it.

gibertot t1_iu4mhry wrote

No we don't. The whole point is gun to your head you have to chose or you would die. That's why you have to make an impossible choice. The gun is there to force you to make that choice. Nobody is choosing the "well just shoot me in the head" choice because they can't decide between fried chicken and sushi.

I hate people who, after engaging in the discussion with an opinion, refuse to answer hypothetical would you rather questions about the topic.

It’s like they can’t realize it’s not about the question, it’s about their answer. ‘Neither’ or ‘I’d rather die’ is just a puss out. It’s an either or question, you don’t get to weasel out of them when you don’t like the options.

I've always taken it to mean there's one right answer, or I just need to make a decision -- any decision. But that's the framing in which I use it. "If I had a gun to my head and had to make a decision this second, I would choose insert option here." It helps me get past those times when I'm just waffling and can't decide.

No, we don't. That's what makes the thing work, the idea of getting shot if you don't take one of the other choices. It is simply generally accepted that being shot is the obvious worst option no one is supposed to take.

This is idiotic.

Ok.. gun to your head.. crunchy pb or creamy?

You gonna pull that trigger with all that peanut butter out there?

2

lgndryheat t1_iu4oy6t wrote

Pretty sure they meant that you always have a third option. Like if you'd rather die than take either option in the hypothetical. Most people interpret it as "which of these two options, you have to pick one" which is absolutely the point of the phrase. OP is saying you can get out of it by saying fuck it, pull the trigger.

I don't think they meant that they never realized that a gun to your head forces you to make a decision.

10

HomieScaringMusic t1_iu4puff wrote

Idk who forgets that. It’s the option I pick about half the time and then she’s like “NO! You HAVE to pick one” and I’m like “then why did you tell me there’s a gun to my head?”

SallyHeap t1_iu4qww7 wrote

I had a mentor once who told me that you ALWAYS have a choice to do something, even if a gun is to your head, so before you do something big, you have to consider the consequences. And then, whatever you choose, you have deliberately decided to accept those consequences. Sure you fight them if you can (don't plead guilty if it was self-defense) but you can't act shocked (when you get arrested and have to plead self defense). I think people forget their own agency sometimes. We are autonomous beings and we have free will.

3

lgndryheat t1_iu56df9 wrote

Have you never heard the expression "Gun to your head, (insert two choices here)?"

It's extremely common, and it's just an expression that means "if you had to choose right now, which of these two options would you pick?" Not "Answer this question or I'll murder you."

YoungJack23 t1_iu5aqk5 wrote

In the realm of possibility, you could potentially refuse to answer and the person with the gun to your head could just put it away.

not really, i don't like worms. my hypothetical worm-gf will either be helping the environment from the inside of my compost bin or stimulating the "circle of life" (the food chain). why would i keep it in a jar, anyway? that seems kind of possessive.
