I don't think you get it: the line "you probably think this song is about you" of kind of dumb, because it IS about them, which makes them not vain for thinking that.

I don’t think you get it. That’s part of the song. Part of the vibe. The singer/lyricist is well aware of the irony, the bitterness, the contradiction.

That said, apparently there are at least three different people it could be about, and maybe it’s not about any of them. But they would all likely think it is.

It probably is though. i’m pretty sure the lyric is meant to be ironic.

IMO there’s no way the song is about one single person. It’s about all the self-centered people who think everything is about them.

At least one verse was written about Warren Beatty, as Carly Simon revealed in 2003.

The funny part is that after the release of the song, Warren Beatty called her to thank her for writing a song about him.
