He had a problem with that in the comics.

He needed to make money and was looking to sell his web formula, but no-one wanted to buy it since "what's the point in re-inventing the post-it note?"

He admitted that the web formula was created by accident before he got his powers and was a "problem looking for a solution".

In the comics he had a couple different formulas, including one for long term that didn't dissolve on it's own, but his swinging stuff will dissolve in an hour.

Not sure how they do it these days, but Tobey McGuire Spider-Man was actually the introduction of natural Web shooters. So there was no canon
