I think I’ll trade a little privacy for some air conditioning and plumbing though.

Yeah, just stare at the mirrors from the stall door crack, you'll catch someone washing their hands eventually and it will absolutely ruin their bathroom experience, possibly their day.

But my spatially aware ass is always snapping focus straight to people checking stalls for occupation, and eye contact is somewhat inevitable.

In the US maybe. Most places around the world don't have your ridiculous toilet doors.

MadClam97 t1_j29shhh wrote

Why is that? Why does the whole world have privacy in public restrooms but here in the US we're like full view in every stall!

In the US maybe. Most countries I’ve been to have proper private stalls with floor to ceiling walls. And a bidet.

A friend got me a bidet as a chrisas present like 5 years ago. Changed my life completely.

Normal toilet experiences just feel SO much worse in comparison

Is the bidet common in public restrooms? I (American) was in Italy for two weeks and the only bidets I found were at my lodging places

In the US maybe. Their bathroom stalls are atrocious. Most of the rest of the world is more sensible.

The first public restroom I used in London was a wall-length troph.

That's for hand washing, usually comes with little soaps to use

I don't care how ridiculous this may seem but there is just something so unsettling about pooping onto other peoples poop.

when I was deployed in Iraq, clean porta-poties were definitely a bit of a sanctuary to me. unless it was 120 degrees. then they were more like a sweat lodge

I would rather piss in front of someone than use one, the overwhelming heat, stretch, and inability to wash your hands...and that means the inside handle has been touched by so many dirty hands....no thank you.

I've had the most amazing conversations with people in the Porto next to me.

Something about pooping outside in a plastic stall with randoms really levels the playing field.
