I keep seeing people recommend Luckys. I had, hands down, one of the worst restaurant experiences of my life there. It was so shockingly bad I thought I was being pranked. The waitress took our order, mine was a combo that included a dessert. Waitress brought the dessert first, and that was the last we saw her. Apparently her shift was over but no one told us. Another waitress eventually brought my meal but not my wife’s. Said it’d be right out. We ordered drinks again, never came the first time. My food was cold when it got to me so if figured I’d wait for my wife’s meal because why not. Drinks came, no second meal. Never came, we said forget it just the bill. There were double charges plus the meal that never came was on there. And they gave us a hard time about fixing it. Mind you, there was maybe two other tables in the place. I guess it could be a bad night, but wow. That was a whole new level.

I'd consider this an anomaly. I won't pretend Lucky's is anything more than a kind of comfort food diner spot, but the I know the owner John is pretty demanding among his staff. I imagine you got someone who was criticized too many times and you got the bad end of a walk off. Give it another shot? Assuming you like the food which is what it is.

Yeah, I’m not opposed to it. I worked in the service industry for years and know even the best place or employee has shitty days. And I also hear it recommended a lot. It’s just really hard to shake an experience like that. And it was pre-Covid too, so not a matter of lack of help. But to your point, they must be doing something reasonably well to hang around as long as they have. So I’m willing to try again.

So although it’s slightly removed from downtown (barely. about 2-3 minutes east and totally worth driving to), I’m gonna throw in Elm Street Diner.

Been going there my whole life since they opened. Their consistency is amazing, always upbeat happy people working, and this time of year you’re almost guaranteed to get a free donut with your check (if you weren’t smart enough to already order one).

Good suggestions offered. I'll add The Wheel if you want to be fancy. Solid menu, even more solid ambiance.
