I haven’t found any good authentic Mexican food here. Coming from California, I never realized how spoiled we were with great Mexican/South American food until coming to the northeast. It must exist, but I haven’t found it yet.

If you're talking about Mexican food or BBQ specifically, then I agree. But in terms of overall food, NYC and Houston are in completely different leagues.

You might have better luck with visiting one of the food trucks on Long Wharf Drive in New Haven. I know that's 40 mins away but it's a lot of fun and the food trucks are very authentic.
