That the good part of living in a commie country like Sweden.
I need to go to the doctor, $20, that includes operations etc.
Need meds? Are you under 18? Free. Otherwise you don't have to pay more than $180 in a year before it gets... Free.
Dental, that's the thing that can cost you. Under 18? Free. Otherwise you can have to pay a bit, a root canal is about $400
Need sick days? Sure, have a years worth! You need a doctor's note after you've been sick for 7 days.
Vacation? Sure, here take 25 days paid per year - also the company have to give the between june-august (if you want), summer vacations is nice.
Need to work overtime? Sure, the payrate goes up the minute you go past 40 hours a week. No working for "free".
Also 10 days paid no questions asked leave for personal matters, let's say a parent passes away and you need to sort out stuff and go to the funeral.
Free schools, free lunches (that has to be nutritious), free schools bus rides.
Need to have kids in the kindergarten so you can work? Sure, fee is based on how much you make, so it is affordable. That can include evening/nights if you work those shifts (don't know about that first hand tho)
I pay taxes out of my ass for it tho, but I am happy do do it. I know my kids will be fed in school and I am not afraid of getting sick or having to go to the doctor.

Besides, the difference isn't even that big between the US and the Nordic, at least not when you account for US payments that aren't taxes, e.g. health insurance. Or education...
And if you get into an accident, you won't be billed 3000 or 5000 dollars for an ambulance ride (not even joking). Medicines that are way more covered elsewhere can be pricey in America, like insulin. Et cetera, et cetera.

I’m in America and have decent dental insurance. I recently got a root canal that cost me ~$1600 out of pocket. 😭
pbxtech t1_j7cir6i wrote
Decent dental insurance? That’s not a thing, is it?
moontiara16 t1_j7cjmkd wrote
Haha, decent dental insurance in that the dentist and endodontist costs are “discounted” and then I have an additional $1000 to use for treatments varying from a filling to root canal.
I recently saw that someone did the calculation and it was cheaper for them to take a vacation in Spain for a week and get a root canal there. Of course, that didn’t include any follow up appointments.

I really admire these folks for showing their support for this child, however, I am quite embarrassed by how we treat the vulnerable. In spite of the subreddit name, I wasn’t uplifted but embarrassed.

He has medical care. They removed him from his biological family because they kept missing appointments. Probably the reason why he had two below knee amputations and an arm amputation. Try reading the article instead of karma-whoring with outrage.

He definitely has free medical care through our state health insurance program and likely did right from birth. CT is really good about providing free health care to children and we have excellent hospital systems but lots of parents have a hard time taking care of their kids, even with support.

I don’t know if revealing America’s shitty infrastructure and lack of societal care is really “uplifting” per se.
Goatshavemorefun t1_j78xcme wrote
I think the uplifting part is that even though there is so much shit in America, there are people willing to find a way through it to make it better.
I used to work in a church and saw first hand that people can make a huge difference if they want to.
Just like Bigweld always says "see a need, fill a need"

Yesterday an acquaintance of mine, trying to cure my mental illness through the power of positive thinking, told me about the visibly disabled man she used to see walking down the road in all weather every day on his way to work. By all weather, I mean -40F winters and 100F summers in a place with no public transportation that is designed for cars, not pedestrians. She said it was inspiring because he was pushing through his adversity, and she admired him. From her car in which she did not offer the disabled man a ride. I'm of the opinion that illustrates societal failure on many levels and is nightmarish rather than inspiring, but I did run out of Kool aid a while back.
Same vibes.
