I mean I know you're joking but there's no way in a million years. Aside from the US already having a lithium mine in Nevada, India has more than a billion people, and China and Russia would *definitely* come to its aid in that case. It would be bloody and awful, and then America would lose really really hard.

makelo06 t1_j8b028l wrote

With the density of their population, bombings would be much more effective. Also, population =/= strength. Vietnam had a large number advantage, yet still lost 10 soldiers for every American killed (not even including civilian casualties). Their training is also historically terrible, along with Indian, Chinese, and Russian technology. It would be bloody, but not for the US.

And remind me, who won that war?

I didn't specify US deaths, I said they'd lose. I have this nasty habit of caring about innocent deaths no matter where they're from. You, on the other hand, appear to be starting from the position of mass-bombing civilians.

You know.....war crimes....

Wasn't there a coup in Bolovia some time recently? One that coincide with half of the world's reserve of lithium being there, and the country wants to nationalise the mines.

I don't see this as a good news for India, to be honest.

peter-doubt t1_j89bs1l wrote

Lithium is #3 on the periodic table.. it's plentiful, but almost always in a chemical compound with other elements.

The biggest reason nobody knew about it is that nobody looked. The salt flats of western US have it, but how to extract it from compounds is usually the issue

Ok I get the joke, but really, do people here think the USA can invade the country with the largest population in the world, which has one of the largest standing armies in the world, AND which has nukes? We saw how well the US sent has fared in our neighborhood (Afghanistan and Vietnam -which is a little further) and we're massive compared to those two...

Can you elaborate on the pesticide factory?

A-Delonix-Regia t1_j8d44ji wrote

Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhopal_disaster

TLDR: There is an American chemicals company called Union Carbide, and they had a pesticide factory in Bhopal, India (around the geographical centre of India).

In December 1984, a storage tank at the factory, storing methyl isocyanate (a toxic gas) leaked due to a water leak into the tank (the gas reacts with water and causes a large increase in gas pressure), and the pressure broke the tank and all the gas leaked out. There were three safety devices installed to prevent this sort of problem, and all three were not working due to poor maintenance.

The gas leaked out to the nearby neighbourhoods, injuring more than 500,000 people. About 8,000 died within two weeks (another 8,000 are believed to have died years later due to long-term illnesses from the poisoning).

Union Carbide claims that it was sabotage by an employee, but there is no conclusive evidence whether it happened on its own or because of sabotage. But, Union Carbide had poorly maintained safety systems which could have stopped sabotage if they were properly maintained and functioning.
