Kinda funny. You can do this with any fanbase/hobby. "no video games/porn on a dead planet." Boom. Half the internet has rallied on side of tackling climate change.

Don’t see how this helps really, either people believe in it or they don’t

More than half of people in the world believe that climate change is not just real but is an emergency.

Furthermore, celebrities really can influence how much their fans care about political issues. Fewer people think climate change is the most serious problem their society faces (it is), so celebrities focusing on the issue can meaningfully change that.

I actually find it funny because a large number of BTS fans are not old enough to even know who ‘Stan’ is.

I find it funny that for us older Korean-Americans, BTS stood for Burning Ttonggumong (Anus) Syndrome before the kpop group came out.

E.g. Taco Bell gave me gnarly BTS

Doesn't this kind of thing usually play out with people coming up with a new "most popular guess" meaning and eventually that becomes an official alternate meaning of the term?

Much to the irritation of people who knew the original meaning already.

Why?

Josquius t1_iy4qav7 wrote

Irrational insecurity about growing old probably.

Though I think there might be more logic to it in being a reference to a 20 year old song that was a big deal when it was new but otherwise hasn't had much of a cultural impact until this.

That phrase is a bit misleading. The planet will be fine. We're the ones that will be dead 🙃

TasteCicles t1_iy47cgj wrote

We're also causing and accelerating a mass extinction event, so it's not great for every living thing around us.

FartingBob t1_iy4cdve wrote

The planet will still be there but if we manage to kill 90% of life in the process that doesn't mean the planet is "fine" even if humanity is wiped out.
