Doesn't this kind of thing usually play out with people coming up with a new "most popular guess" meaning and eventually that becomes an official alternate meaning of the term?

Much to the irritation of people who knew the original meaning already.

I find it funny that for us older Korean-Americans, BTS stood for Burning Ttonggumong (Anus) Syndrome before the kpop group came out.

E.g. Taco Bell gave me gnarly BTS

Though I think there might be more logic to it in being a reference to a 20 year old song that was a big deal when it was new but otherwise hasn't had much of a cultural impact until this.
