I wonder if we’re at a crucial turning point in history, the start of a beautiful golden age. Please let it be so!

Cool, can we get green lobbying groups now? Seems to be the only way to get the oil industry to fuck all the way off.

Interestingly enough, most of the big oil companies are actually investing pretty heavily into greener alternatives. Not because its ethical but because the massive companies that have existed for decades know how to look for trends and changes in the market. Theyve recognized that greener alternatives are becoming the way of the future, especially as tech evolves to make them more efficient, so they invest in it early to reap the rewards as it becomes the new standard.

Its a weird kind of greedily uplifting element from long term investment strategies.

Most of their "green energy" programs are just set up to get government grants or bullshit like corn ethanol, and converting natural gas to hydrogen. As far as I can tell they just keep thinking they can pay off enough politicians to maintain their relevance (it's working so far).

I don't understand. What is better than free?

Windmills and solar panels... once you build them. A little maintenance and free energy. No digging up energy. No putting it in or on a truck or tanker ship. No license plates and replacement tires and registrations and hiring drivers and ship captains and crew.

Nothing like that bullshit. Just sunlight and wind.

100 years from now I hope we think all that old fashioned stuff is stupid. Because it is.

1 windmill or solar panel has infinitesimal (very small fraction) total energy compared to an oil well. The logistics/ supply chain has already been built up and developed. There’s a really strong economic incentive for oil and gas incumbents to want to preserve the status quo, even if it could be detrimental to humanity as a whole

I really hope green technology goes down the path of cutting off a lot of the fluff with the investments, where entities and projects go for flashiness while not actually being that “green”. Don’t get me wrong, this is great, but it’s easier to affect that change now compared to later when it’s all more established and adopted by everyone
