I could be mistaken but these look like maybe yearlings. Mama bears let them sink or swim after raising them their first season. At least that’s what fish and wildlife told me when I reported an abandoned bear cub on an MTB trail I frequent.

Yep, young unafraid and restless. Not the massive bears you think of but still fully formed death machines and VERY opportunistic. They will pal around until hibernation and then break off.

Good thing you weren't near it Thankfully I'm yet to come across any cubs while trekking, but have seen places they've been.
