let's say your birthday is today. 2/3/2023. Current license expires 2024.

You pay the $54 to renew for 6 years right now.

Will the new license mailed expire in 2/3/2030? Or will it expire based on purchase date being 2/3/2029 expiring?

Be sure to get the enhanced drivers license if they're not already requiring it. Eventually it will be required for everyone. Getting now will save you later.

You get six years added to the expiration date of the card you are renewing

I just happened to show up to the DOL 362 days before my licensed expired. There was a snow storm and no one else there. They let me know I could renew now if I wanted to, so I did. License showed up in the mail days later and it was like getting an extra year. The expiration date has nothing to do with the renewal date, it's based on the expiration date.

With any annual renewal you want to wait until it is closer to expiration. With online subscriptions let it auto renew. If you have to manually renew it wait until the month of or day of. In driver's license wait until the month of.

When you renew things early; you loose time you could of gotten on your last subscription. Time and $ you'll never get back. Better to wait until about 3-6 weeks before it renews. Set an auto reminder on your calendar for one month before. If you renew online it will take 1-6 weeks to get to you. The dmv is closing down all but a few essential locations in my area. Due to online renewing being highly encuraged.

I believe license fees went up Jan 1. I can't recall the details, but when I got mine in mid January, the price they charged was higher than the website, and her comment in explanation was related to recent changes for 2023. Maybe they're slow to update the info on the web?
