I don't believe we have any specific laws against it, but our distracted driving law is really vague. Also it's illegal to do more than minimal use of the phone while driving even if it's mounted.

I would only be using it for GPS, so I don't have to keep looking down at my phone resting on the passenger's seat. I know, those distracted driving laws are definitely vague.

But people around here do use these phone holders mounted to the rearview, don't they?

Not sure, but I think the kind that mounts into the air vents is more functional and would be less of a concern as far as legality since it doesn’t block the window at all.

I think it’s legal. many people have dash cans there. my phone attaches to my windshield and I’ve been pulled over for tabs and it’s sitting there and they never mentioned it

You can mount stuff to the windshield (which is illegal in some states), but that’s just a very crappy design, placing the phone in your field of vision.

Place the phone way lower down so it’ll not be more of a distraction than what it already is. Tons of good clip mounts, magnetic mounts, etc.

Not legal advice AT ALL... but I did just get a ticket for using my phone while driving and the officer asked why I didn't have a dash or window mount.

I have put my phone covering part of the speedometer and gas gauge when I need to see the directions. In terms of the rear view mirrors, you must have any two of the three. A work van with no rear windows had the mirror and it was kind of pointless, and sometimes hauling stuff in a car renders that mirror useless as well.

This would block your view too much. I recommend getting one of the mounts that hooks up and sits in your air vent. I have a Belkin on that is great and is in a good line of sight without blocking the windshield and I barely need to tilt my head to look at it.
