Hello everyone!

I frequently order from doordash since my work doesn't allow me to have too much spare time to go and pick it up myself. Over the past few days, I've been seeing some posts online where folks who deliver the orders are not happy with the tips that they get.

I want to make sure that I'm tipping enough for the effort the dashers put in to get my order delivered. Currently, If I have a $20 order, I tip $4. The default tip that the app suggests is super high. I don't want to come across as cheap but I don't want to tip like 30-40% either since I don't have that much money myself.

Can you please help me in understanding what would be a good % to tip? Thank you in advance!

My standard tip is 20%. I don't use DoorDash much (maybe once or twice in a lifetime) but when I did I tipped that amount. If it's a real small order I will bump it up to an amount that makes it worth the driver's while, so $2 if the item is $5. That's so little they are likely taking a loss on it - counting their time as money and knowing the shafting those people get from their "employer." In my state there's no "tipped employee" wage like many states have, which is like $2.13/hr. But they still don't get paid what they are worth.

As they get base pay plus a percentage of the order, you aren’t obligated to tip. So don’t worry about it - the fees are enough pay for what they do.

You definitely should read the comment above. You're definitely obligated to tip

This is not true at all. May your deliveries be cold and your fries eternally soggy until you learn your lesson.

The reality is, without tips no one is going to do that job. If you value that service being available to you, you will tip accordingly.

No - the people doing the job get a cut of the sale, as well as part of the delivery fee. A tip is EXTRA if the person ordering it wants to give it.

If the person doesn’t want to give a tip for whatever reason, they don’t have to. But the person delivering still needs to do their job and deliver, in order to earn their fee and cut, and to keep their job.

Right, but it’s not worth doing if you don’t make good money. What you just described isn’t actually very much, so without tips, it’s unlikely people will do this job.

Then that’s their choice.

It should also be the choice of the consumer to not tip. The drivers still get paid.

Well it is, but that service will go away if people cannot make money doing it. One way or another, the consumer will have to pay.
