Moving to WA next month. Still have my license from Hawai'i but have been in Texas the past 2 years. Filed taxes in Texas.

Plan is to get a WA drivers license when I move there. But I'd like to keep my Hawai'i driver license for kamaaina purposes (nothing government related) when I visit Hawai'i.

Do I have to give them my Hawai'i license when I get a Washington license? If so, then I'd probably just lose my Hawai'i license unfortunately in the moving process and not have one to forfeit.

If you present a valid out-of-state driver license when applying for a Washington license DOL will waive the "knowledge and drive test".

Your out-of-state license will be returned to you with a hole punched in it. https://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/moving.html

Thank you. Any idea where the hole is? Is it on an edge I can cover when I flash it at a restaurant in Hawai'i? Or is it gonna be right through the face or middle?

They punched mine through the expiration date to “immediately invalidate it”. Incidentally, Dept of licensing here takes about 10 minutes for what could be an all day process in some other states. Mind. Blown.

Okay cool

Getting a license in Hawai'i is a god damn nightmare. I still have dreams about camping at 4am and not getting seen until 4pm

I you want to sail through then drive out to north bend DMV on a week day, it’s normally empty I’ve gotten new licenses there in 20 minutes from showing up.

TRAFFIC in Hawaii is a godamn nightmare. You go in, and they’ll print you a temp DL on paper, then you’ll get your real one in the mail.

Mine was a punch to the upper left corner, on my old Texas ID.

I suspect the hole will go through the Hawaii state seal.

They punched my old Maryland license in the middle along the top edge

You have to show them your old license which waives any testing from Washington. Then they hole punch the old license and give it back to you.

Another option would be to “lose” your Hawaii license now and order a back up before you move. Then have the hole punched through the replacement one

Can't you just get a regular state ID card from Hawaii before you leave? I know in dome places a regular ID is valid longer than a license.

I have my license from another state, but it has a hole punched in it now

While not the same circumstances, I have six old driver's licenses, only one has a hole punched in it. I've moved a few times and each time it I move or it expires, I get a new one. Even the expired one didn't get a hole punch.

I still have all my OG licenses but they punched a hole in them to signify they are no longer valid.

Talk story and distract them and maybe they will forget to hole punch ‘em. 😂

They hole punch it so it can’t be used like a valid license.

Here, in WA, mostly everything is online except getting a new license. You can start the paperwork, and upload documents online (use the license express link on dol.wa.gov).

In some state, you can get a non-photo state ID (for example - snowbirds going to AZ) but I'm not sure if we have that here. That would, in theory, allow you to retain your "permanent" ID, and use the non-photo state ID for WA proof.

You can keep it, but you will have to retest. You won't have to retest if it is valid and you submit it, WA DOL will punch a hole in it and return it.
