Yes and no! I’m born and raised here and so 98% of my family is here— if we weren’t so rooted, I might consider a move.

I moved once for work (to Arizona), but couldn’t stand the constant sun/heat.

I love the fresh air (when there’s no wildfire smoke lol), fresh seafood and produce, how green everything is, proximity to water and Canada. I struggle with living here during January and February.

… you take that… no you’re absolutely 100% correct. I hear it way too often but this place is “the forgotten realm of reality..”

Do I like living here in Washington? Yes and no. Yes, because it’s the first place that I moved to without any care or opinions of my family. Picked a place on the map and moved to Sequim. All with two backpacks, a duffel bag and a box with my bike in it. One of my siblings called me a “selfish bastard.” For not considering them first. Oh well., I am out here. Have a family now. Also the green, and the weather. (I have lived in Minnesota for winters and summers, I have lived in Southern California out near Palm Springs), No, because Forks is small, it’s redneck, and it’s not super friendly to outsiders (despite what is said).

1

RakaYourWorld t1_jabrnkg wrote

Please don't use the term redneck. I'm not one to get offended, but I grew up in Kentucky and every presumes people in Kentucky have no shoes, running water, and are "Rednecks" You don't know how blessed you are until you've spent 20 years in Eastern Kentucky. So please, just stop.

−6

IamPlantHead t1_jac1ocq wrote

You might have lived somewhere where that term is by definition Redneck. But did you think there is other places in the country it also applies? I never said anything about “no shoes” “running water”. If you wanna go that route. Then yes I have lived in places that fit that definition. But if your definition of “redneck” is hillbilly. Than I can even use that describe or “presume” your definition. With places I lived or even of Forks., or the immediate surrounding areas.

1

RakaYourWorld t1_jacxvp3 wrote

Why can't we all just have a little respect for each other? Why are some insulting, degrading words worth not saying in fear of offending me, but others are okay? I don't wanna argue, just saying that I moved away from eastern Kentucky to start a new life and I've had to deal with this type of shit for years. That's all I was trying to say.

−1

IamPlantHead t1_jadachs wrote

When I used Redneck the first time it wasn’t an insult. My definition was based off what is seen in a dictionary: “rural laboring class”. There was no disrespect. There are two major jobs or laboring jobs here in Forks: Logging and working at the prison/correction center. Of course there are more jobs out here. But again that’s part of the “rural laboring class.” .. Now if you were thinking of the slang/degrading term term for Redneck “no shoes” “running water”,. Or what people equate to Redneck., than that’s on you. And for that I am sorry. Never meant it as such. .. I moved to Washington to start a new life too. My dad had just died. My great grandma, and my aunt died all within six months of each other. My girlfriend at the time was cheating on me. Had a few friends kill themselves, kinda a sucky time. Also had one major surgery since my dad’s death. What did I do? I moved. Enough was enough. … I am happy you got out of Kentucky. Sounds like it was really horrible. No one should have to go through that.

Well said. Completely agree with you. Yeah some of the rural areas do suck here in Washington. But that doesn’t cancel out the sheer beauty of the truly beautiful and amazing places we have around here in Washington. It’s like for me. Like in my comment I lived in Minnesota near the Mississippi River. And wasn’t far from Headwaters, or even the Boundary Waters (I actually recommend visiting there.) because it’s stunning. And heck even some of the small towns a great. Stillwater Minnesota is cute “little” town. I lived in Southern California out near Palm Springs Joshua Tree Park is beautiful for the nights sky’s. Lived in Florida near alligator alley. Absolutely hated it there but still pretty. There is beauty in every place. And sadly there is a lot of ugly too. Whether the people who inhabit the area or the actual landscape.

One of my favorite views is driving north on I-5 in Seattle just before the 520 exit, when the sun is low and casts a shadow of my vehicle on the imposing freeway wall to my right, looking out over lake union, past the ships and waterways of Fremont to catch a glimpse of the snow peaked Olympic mountains.

Driving into Seattle over lake Washington two weeks ago, the Olympics were shining, the mountain was out, and then driving home the sun was setting on the cascades.

Beauty is everywhere here if you're looking for it.

I was lucky enough to have had a good education and training to do what I love here in Washington. I’m also pretty lucky that I was able to afford a home before prices skyrocketed in an area that suddenly became a landlord/real estate investor’s paradise. I don't know. Opportunity is good, there's everything I need, I'm comfortable.

But people are strange, and it's lonely. Everyone talks about the beauty of the state but I don't see it. It's so dull and there are just roads everywhere, it's not walkable. If there is beauty I guess you gotta drive 2 hours away to see it? Some days it feels like I'm living in a junkyard. I thought it was just Everett, but it feels like the whole Seattle area is like that, haven't found a place that clicks.

Ex: you look up "beach" on Google Maps and in theory there are plenty around but they're tiny and inaccessible. Same for parks, half of the park is a parking lot. I don't get it.

4

I haven’t lived there…yet. But perspective is important.

We’re about to move to Washington from Texas. I welcome open roads, trees, water, rain and isolation. I’ve lived in Dallas the last 5 years and the heat is literally killing me and my 2 young boys. Not to mention the violent drivers. I’m ready for access to waterfalls, ocean, trees, hills, precipitation. We’re looking to embrace all the ‘negatives’ that Washington has to offer and look forward to it.

It’s all about perspective.

Open spaces being turned into housing developments. People having a difficult time finding a place to rent. The housing market values reaching six figures plus. The increasing numbers of the homeless.

On the other side, yes, Washington state is extraordinary beautiful in all of it natural beauty. Within an hour's drive, you can walk, hike, bike and ski to your heart's pleasure and content.

The only thing that I have a very difficult time with mentally is the "Dark Season". This is from November to early February, when there is a great loss of daylight and much darkness.

Yes, having lived around much of the US, I love SW WA and hopefully am in my forever home.

Downside:
I get affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder but I installed a 1000W metal halide grow light in a garage bay. I sit under that for an hour or two per day (reading) and it helps tremendously with SAD and only cost $0.07-$0.15 per day for ‘treatment.’ I have to wear sunglasses, lol. My dog tracks in so much mud it’s terrible. Always have the Cascadia fault in mind, but no different from California and San Andreas fault. Weeds grow, well like weeds. Good restaurants are few and far between in our rural area.

Upside: Air is extremely clean here. (Forest fires are almost always east and downwind of where we live.). There’s plentiful water here, seafood too. Hunting & fishing is outstanding Get a few days of snow and enough cold days for good fruit production. Cost of living is very reasonable. Mountains and ocean are both an easy hour drive away. Population density is very low, people are friendly. No state income tax! Finally got rid of 4 Mbps DSL (thanks Elon)
