Portage island was bought back from the government, and it is now reservation. I’ve toured the island and it’s a beautiful place with lots of history. You can find “way” trees, where they are pointed purposefully to show you the way. My friends family was one of the last families to live on portage island before being forcibly removed by the government.

My understanding is it’s a sacred place to the lummi, and there’s people buried out there.

I visited skull island once in massacre bay, out in west sound on Orcas. Then I read how it got the name. Very sombering of the brutality of life back then. A band of Haida warriors paddled down and decimated an entire lummi fishing camp, decapitating them and placing heads on spikes. It had an ominous feel and I didn’t stay long.

That’s brutal, but that’s how it used to be. People refer to the tribes nowadays as being slavers. And it’s true.

Wild. We grew up rowing to Skull from our grandparents place and playing there.
