I’m 21 in November, my ID is vertical, but doesn’t expire until a year after my 21st! I’ve heard a lot of bars (Vancouver area) will deny you for a vertical ID regardless of exp] So here’s the thing, I can’t renew my ID as a horizontal one until the date of my birthday, so obviously I wouldn’t have the card that day. I’m not a bar hop party kind of person, I likely just want to have a nice dinner and a couple drinks. Am I just shit out of luck?

Liquor board is tough in WA. a lot of businesses just avoid the vertical

I’ve heard legally there’s no issue other than the possibility of it being a fake and them accidentally selling to a minor, which I understand completely wanting to avoid that. It’s just kind of a shitty grey area to be in. They should allow you to apply for the horizontal one month before your 21st 😂

Most bars I’ve been to have a sign that says they don’t accept vertical IDs.

I’ve seen people get away with the horizontal paper copy and the hole punched vertical.

If you have a passport that’s the best bet

Some may, most you shouldn’t have an issue. Dispensaries will have an issue

My poor husband had a temp ID (paper one) for a few weeks after losing his and he couldn’t get into the usual dispo’s. There was only one that still “eye scanned” IDs that allowed him in 😂

Get your passport, as it gives you a backup ID, you can travel into Canada, and beyond, soon you will need it to fly, if you don’t want to pay extra for the real id…

Does my vertical ID not cause issue at dispos because I’m 25?

I had this same issue and called DOL. I spoke with a super nice lady who told me to just order a lost ID replacement after my birthday and I would be sent a horizontal automatically. I missed out on lots of stuff due to my vertical, so I would recommend doing this asap! Edit: also bring your passport to the bars if you have one!

Yeah if op has a passport, that is considered valid ID in WA.

Yes, I did my 21 run with my passport. Bulky but effective

It really depends. My sister in law was in a similar boat and I’d say 50% of the time she got carded she was denied.

You can use your passport, if you have one, to avoid this issue altogether

Out of all the bars I went to in Spokane with a vertical ID only one turned me down so YMMV. If you have a particular spot in mind just call ahead and ask if they care about a vertical ID.

Didn’t even think about calling ahead. I should definitely do that before I decide where I’m going! Easy solution, thank you!!

I’m 24 and still have a vertical ID but the only time I’ve had trouble is at Lumen Field since they have a strict no vertical ID policy

Most will… but most will also happily accept a passport.

Never had an issue in a bar with a vertical, but a few dispensaries have turned me down. If you look old enough and act like you've drank before ever I don't think you'll get sent packing

If you renew on your bday don’t they give you a temporary ID? they do in my state but not sure about Washington

They do, but I’ve heard bars won’t accept those either. Maybe in combination with my vertical it won’t be a problem.
