You're right, being poor doesn't make you a bad person. Neither does breaking the law to feed one's family. Neither does succumbing to drug addiction.

The average person is always closer to being homeless than they are to being rich.

My point isn't that people shouldn't go to prison, or that there aren't any bad people. My point is that the problem is bigger than the individuals. There are known systemic issues that are causing crime just as much as preventing it.

Feeding further into this cycle without addressing it will only make things worse for everyone.
