Absolutely no excuse not to vote in WA—they make it as easy as humanly possibly without telekinesis.

No exciting referendums or initiatives on the ballot, no Governor or presidential races, and a state where many people have gotten used to the idea it doesn’t matter if they vote, democrats like Murray get auto vote back into office every time.
All of this plus those that don’t vote automatically for (d)s really really really motivated… could be the makings of some pretty big upsets out there. Would not be surprised if come Wednesday morning there are a ton of shocked faces in western Washington.
Being aa realist though, it probably won’t happen, at least in Murray’s case, but as far as Washington politics goes, really one word comes to mind… complacency.

Maybe this is why the even-year elections initiative is on the ballot...

My ballot is with me until either the day of or day before Election Day (today). I like filling it out close to Election Day and having it in my possession as long as I can until I drop it in a ballot box.

No excuse to not perform the most minimal of civic duties, even in an increasingly disheartening world. I'm bone tired and it's hard to save the world when the little energy I have is needed for keeping a job and the necessities that come only from a job with benefits (housing, food, medical insurance). But I still voted.

My advice is to vote for issues not candidates. Pick your top issues and see who is closest to your position on them. Also don't let the perfect be the enemy of good.

Thank you. I did too, and yes, though life can be tiresome and stressful, we can rest easier in the knowledge that we at least showed up in this small yet significant way. My sibling hasn't voted yet, probably can't be bothered to, and it upsets me a lot.

I also think people are more wary of their ballots being stolen or fucked with. I know I’m more inclined than I ever used to be to go drop off my ballot in person.
This year I mailed because I wanted to get it in sooner than later, but not everyone knows you can check your ballot status online.
Hopefully we get a bit more of a wave from in-person drop offs.

Yeah, I can understand that you aren't feeling good about the choices.
Unfortunately they have made things so polarizing these last few years that it really comes down to wanting either more 'tRump' like garbage or the other side.
Even voting for a "moderate" GOP candidate is a still another for their side.

Oh yeah I forgot about that time the democrat swat team broke into my house and vaccinated me! /s
The republicans have been trying to suppress, corrupt, and overturn my vote in broad daylight since 2020. They are by definition fascists and no fascist deserves anyone's vote. Democracy is American. Monarchist fascism is literally what the George Washington in 1776 fought against.

I don't think parents instill in their children things like "civic duty". My parents did though, and they hammered it home incessantly. I think it was because they grew up during WW2; my mom's entire family was involved in the war effort, she lost her cousin in the war, her sister donated her dog to be a "War Dog" (she got him back after the war), and my Dad signed up to fight but they rejected him for medical reasons, so they contributed what they could stateside. That war left deep scars on them and they knew the consequences of disengaging politically.
My Dad escorted me to vote in my first election in 1980 and I've voted in almost every election since. There were a few times before mail-in ballots that I couldn't leave work and missed a few, but once I figured out I could get an absentee ballot I was back in business.
People still being complacent in THIS election of all elections shocks and saddens me. People can be so self-centered. "If it doesn't affect ME why should I bother." Good lord.

You called the cops because there was a truck in the parking lot? Clutch your pearls harder.
ignatzami t1_ivhmgxv wrote
I called the non emergency number to let them know a person was loitering in the parking lot of the closed library, yes. They asked how long they’d been there and I said at least an hour as the ground under their truck was dry, and it had been raining for about an hour. The dispatcher asked if they were parked by the ballot box. I said yes. They thanked me for the call, and I went home.

And in our state it's a little different because it so easy. I won't fault anyone for not voting in a place where it means they have to get permission to take off work and go stand in a line for multiple hours when they may be too financially stressed or not sufficiently able-bodied enough to swing it.
Even being at least minimally informed in our state is so easy. I was well into adulthood before I realized that something like our voter's pamphlets, with full text and pros/cons for initiatives and full candidate profiles, was a rarity in the US.

I completely agree. Physically going to the polls is a big deal, and it takes privilege to be able to make it out there. But we've got it made in WA! There's hardly any excuse, even if you aren't that informed and just vote along party lines.
Are our pamphlets really that rare? I've lived here my whole life so I just assumed that's how most places did it. They're a super helpful resource.

Finally dropped mine today. I had to go out of my way to get it too, as neither it, nor its replacement showed up in my mail. This, despite the fact that my roommates both got theirs, I had no problem getting my ballot at this address for the last several elections, i triple-checked my registration, and the website had them marked as sent.
Kind of frustrating. Hope nobody else is having that much trouble.

Do you really think that? Yes, firmly blue Washington, with democratic transplants flooding in for the past 15 years from California and it's republican contingent having migrated out at one of the highest rates in the US. This is hyperbole at best.
