I tried to book one of those spots for last summer. Got up early and logged on early for weeks last winter. Never found one open lol.

My boss camps here every summer. You have to log on a year exactly in advance right in the morning when they come available. He has to do each day otherwise he won’t get his whole trip.

Yeah it was definitely cold 🥶 but we just camped there without reservations and with no close neighbors. Camping heaven! No way I could get this spot at any peak time. Got really lucky it didn't rain during our stay, the kalaloch gods were with us.

When I was 17, I took time off and rode my road bike down to Astoria and back around the OP, camping on the beach at Kalaloch. Free camping on the beach in 1971. Best teenage trip ever. I think the OP is the last best place.

I used to ride my motorcycle out to the coast and camp whenever and wherever I wanted to twenty-five-ish years ago. Long before reservations were necessary. Pack my stuff Thursday evening, ride to work Friday, take off early, and head west with no destination in mind. Can't do that any more but at least I have the memories.

Love Kalaloch. I camped there in November, many years ago - it rained so much the day before I arrived, but when I arrived I saw only clouds and then sunshine. Bliss.

Looks like it could be a scene from Lord of the Rings.

I know that spot very well. My grandparents would take my brother and I there every summer and we loved thst spot because it was semi private, had multiple tent spots and your own trail to the beach.

My family's favorite spot in the 60s and 70s too!

That's so cool! Have you been back any time recently? If so how has it changed? I'm 30 and have seen my fair share of improvements and changes but I'd love to know what it was like back then! Have a great day!

No, I haven't been back in a number of years. But that trunk is iconic. I'm sure there's a snapshot somewhere of all 5 of us kids straddling it. We were avid beachers. We loved clamming!

My family and I camped at kalaloch from the late 70s every August for a week. It was first come first serve, we gave up camping there and bought some land on the coast because it became impossible to get good spots. I still miss it though, lots of great memories.

I love going to the coast in the fall/winter.

Driving through that very busy campground in summer is insane. There is a more primitive CG to the south that often has openings.

Any decent surf nearby?

Nice! It's all snowy in the other side of the mountains. I'm over it lol

Do you mind sharing that site number?

I understand the reason for it, but it really sucks that they moved everything to Recreation.gov. It used to be pretty easy to swing through the WIC in Port Ángeles and snag a walk up reservation at least for somewhere like 2nd or 3rd beach if you even needed one at all. Once, also in November, I carried a bundle of wood on my backpack for camping at 3rd beach. We were the only ones who had a fire that night 😎
