The slide only had the date written on it, but I'm fairly sure of the location. My grandparents had a vacation home on Whidbey.

That restaurant was torn down sometime in 2005 or 2006, going by Google Earth historical imagery.

Torn down many years earlier than that. Where that building stands now has been a public bathroom for the little beach park on the north side of the ferry dock for quite some time. I am curious though, I can’t remember how long it’s been since that building was torn down.

Some vintage rides parked there. Is that a Plymouth Duster in the lower left foreground?

Nixx_Mazda OP t1_izpxknt wrote

Maybe a Gold Duster, if they were fancy. ;)

The clarity of the Everett skyline is a treat to see. Everett General Hospital (now Providence Colby campus) is easy to spot. Some of the big clustered buildings downtown too, maybe The Bon Marche is the biggest one? I don't think you could see the other department stores from the water.

I am pretty sure I had my first birthday in that building.

What islands?

Cmdr_Starleaf t1_izp2mze wrote

This picture specifically I know is Whidbey island.

pala4833 t1_izp78cb wrote

Yes, that's true. Whidbey is a single island, cited as the longest in the country. I was asking what they were referring to as "the islands". It doesn't make sense in local parlance. Folks say "The San Juans". But where are "the islands". Like Fox and Anderson? Indian and Marrowstone?

[deleted] t1_izpfi7g wrote

Whenever I say "the islands" in conversation, I'm always referring to the San Juan Islands and Whidbey Island. I know it doesn't make sense because they're in different counties.

2

Cmdr_Starleaf t1_izqos9g wrote

That’s the most common usage I hear as well. Maybe “the islands” were referring to Whidbey and Hat island 🤷‍♂️.

Speaking of hat Island, I would love a small piece of property there. It only has about 50 full-time residence and you can’t even get to the island unless you yourself are a resident or be guest of a resident. There is a private ferry that only runs on weekends, otherwise you need a private boat.

Sounds amazing. I've never been to hat island. I've seen it many times from Everett and the Mukilteo Clinton ferry. I'd love to live on Whidbey.

I lived in Whidbey for a year. Very strong sense of community there. Also hard to escape the incestuous gossip in a community that close. Like with everything it has it’s pros and cons.

NYCHilarity t1_izqhgt1 wrote

It’s the longest in WA, but not the country, by far. Wiki says it’s the fourth longest in the country.

Long Island is nearly 120 miles long.

What does that have to do with Whidbey?

1

madbushido t1_izssd9n wrote

Nothing specifically. But in a general sense I missed that part of the state thank you for asking

It's been some time since I have been over that. Certainly the Clinton ferry terminal looks the same. Does that ferry still operate?

Are you sure you're from Washington? ;)

Are there any ferry routes that have been shut down over the years? Nothing major that I can think of...
