Hey there, I'm looking to move to Washington, and specifically the Seattle area, but I can't afford in the city.
Does anyone on here have any specific impressions on Silverdale? Anything to be worried about? What is the commute into the city like, if any?

I haven't taken the ferry in about 6 months. Has the situation gotten any better? The last time I rode, they still didn't have all the ferries and routes back at full service.
They are still short of staff, and it can be dicey. Generally it’s ok though.
Bremerton is still on alternate one-boat service, which really sucks because if you miss one, you are 2 hours out from the next one.
The only crossing really affected was the Kingston/Edmonds. Looks like they're back to 2 boats on that crossing now.
I thought I remembered Bainbridge being affected as well. They had crazy long wait times, at least, but yeah, Kingston/Edmonds was the route I usually took. I'm glad to hear it's back to 2 boats.

That was just normal busy season being even more busy. Numbers of crossings at Bainbridge and Bremmertron were always at normal levels.
Silverdale is a pretty nice place. I used to live there. However, if you’re going to be working on the EAST side of Puget Sound, you’re in for a LOOOOOONG commute, and more and more expensive. You will need to factor in that travel time and ferry cost into your cost calculations. Silverdale is pretty much a Navy town. It’s right outside of the submarine base. The town basically lives and dies by the Navy.
As far as surrounding areas and stuff to do, if you are into outdoorsy stuff, it’s great. Good access to the Oly peninsula and lots of opportunities for hiking, camping, etc. Fishing is also very popular, both in Hood Canal and in Puget Sound. Silverdale does have a boat launch, but not much of a marina.
If you’re looking to work on the East side of the sound, I would look more toward Bothell, Redmond, Issaquah, Renton sort of way.
Came to Silverdale from NOVA. We love the area, and the people couldn't be nicer . Husband works in Seattle and would take the Bainbridge island ferry,but he's still teleworking.
Homes in Silverdale are mostly on hills on either side of the town (which is sea level). So, unless you live near the water It's nothing to worry about. (Flooding)
The Olympic mountains are the background to Silverdale and on clear/mostly clear days, never disappoint.

The traffic can sometimes be awful. Just remember that almost every single cultural or musical event in the region will happen in Seattle. That will be at least two hours away by ferry or driving around. Silverdale and Kitsap in general have great parks and lots of walking trails. Even more wilderness is closer than Seattle. Our air is usually better than in Seattle. We have an REI, and local seafood in a few markets.

You can look up FEMA flood maps

Those maps are based on years, centuries, of data. Flooding in your town outside the recognized 100 year floodplain are anecdotal incidents. Expected anomalies that can happen with natural systems. If you want some other anecdotal stories from randos, rather than do your due diligence with official flood maps when you're investing a half million dollars, then you do you. I'm mean fuck science, right?
Flood maps don’t show urban rainfall driven flooding. They show where rivers and coasts flood.

There are a few rivers in WA that flood regularly. I don’t think Silverdale is an area that floods.

Silverdale to Seattle is close to a 2 hr drive. You can catch the bremerton ferry tho. Silverdale is nice. It can get a little congestion during traffic time. I work in Seattle and commute from bremerton, I would move to Silverdale if the right opportunity came up. It is beautiful in the surrounding areas
